      Yeah, I believe UPlay only. AFAIK AC IV: BF will all be through UPlay anyway - if you buy on Steam it'll just launch the UPlay client. So registering the Season Pass through UPlay should work fine even if you have the main game via Steam.

    I hate season pass.

    Seems like multiple DLCs is the norm for a game these days, which means you have to wait for the content to be released when the game will no longer be fresh in your head and you've moved on to the next game already.

    Season pass is basically a pre-purchase of all this content months before you get to play it or find out if it's any good or not.

    DLCs are always bad value in terms of hours per dollar spent, compared to the main game.

      I'm not sure that that's the case. Often a full priced $60 game (more for consoles) is only ~20 hours of content, but then you can typically buy DLC for $5 that provides 2-4 hours more. In this case, you're getting 4 packs of DLC for $11. It's certainly possible they won't be good, but personally this looks like a game I'll really get into, so I'm willing to take the gamble, and even if only 2 of them are good DLC it'll still be decent value IMO.

        Depends on the game. Most games that can be beaten in 10 hours, you usually get multiplayer DLC rather than new single player content, though there are exceptions.

        Mass Effect 3 which got me about 50 hours of gameplay in one playthrough for $60, has DLCs totalling $50. It's an extra 10 hours or so of gameplay, and that's being generous.

        I don't mind if DLC is a separate side story not related to the main campaign because then I can skip it, but when they cut things out (like a conclusion for example) to make you pay more for it, they may as well just increase the sticker price of the game.

        Waiting months for it kind of sucks, but then again day 1 DLC just means they had the content ready the whole time but wanted to charge more for it.

          As a developer I don't think this is strictly true. With AAA games everything is based on budgeting, and despite it meaning they worked on it before the game's release, most DLC is worked on by non-developers (world designers, artists, etc.) while the developers are still working out bugs, and so I think day 1 DLC primarily means that they invested more into those non-developers working on the project with the expectation of receiving more in return. If they weren't doing it as day 1 DLC, that content probably would never have existed.

        • I don't know how development works, but I would think that the DLC would require at least some input from coders, and bug testing by them.

          I think that if it wasn't released day 1, they could still release it a month or two later.

          I think DLC is handled most tastefully when they take some side quest or side story from the main game and expand upon it, maybe even a prequel episode with different characters. As long as it's not essential to the main plot.

          Multiplayer DLC is mostly fine as is.

          In the case of the cliffhanger ending that says To Be Continued. This is like saying, wanna see the real ending? Give us another $10 or GTFO. That's the most egregious kind of DLC.

          I'm not a fan of season passes in general. You don't know what you're getting and when you're getting it but you're paying up front.

          I actually liked the ME3 DLC's (the content ones, at least). Pricing wasn't too crash hot, no, but if you were invested in the game it wasn't such a bad purchase. Also, consider that ME3's multiplayer got a lot of free support - all the multiplayer DLC was free and really increased the diversity and quality.

          And I agree with CarbonTwelve regarding the Day One DLC. They don't develop it alongside the main game, then cut it out. When different stages of development finish, the staff are shuffled around to work on other projects - including DLC (or completely different games). By the time the main game has finished bug testing and final approval, and the physical media is in production, the DLC would be very much underway (if not close to completion). So Day One DLC isn't really that insulting, IMO.

        • Nah, DLC rarely requires much coding. Take something like Mass Effect for example where they add DLC for a new character. The framework is already there for characters in the party, for animations for that character, for sounds, quests, events, etc. etc. Everything is already in place, it just requires the artists/animators/designers/etc. to provide the resources.

          But yes, I agree that if the game's ending was cut out and sold as DLC that'd be pretty terrible. Not sure what game you're referring to if that's happened before though…
