Treadmill

Have been jogging for a while (outdoors). Am running just over 5 km in 30 minutes 2-3 times per week. I'm about 78 Kg and 184 cm (about 6 foot) tall.

I love running outdoors but I thought it would be good to have a treadmill for when it's either raining or too hot outside (or just to encourage me to jog a bit more when the kids are in bed).

Because I only plan to use it on occasion (when I can't get outside) my budget - yes, it's low - is $650 pick-up from within 50 km of Lyndhurst VIC or $700.00 delivered.

I'm thinking new - because if I get one second hand and the motor dies I might be up for what I paid for it to get it fixed. A new one would tend to have a 5-year warranty.

I've done some looking but would love any suggestions or ideas.

I've been watching these:

Thoughts greatly appreciated.

  • Its a shame you can't try before you buy. Maybe you can call them and find out? I would get the Heavy Duty, will be better as the frames on these things are known to crack. There is no way these are built for max 250kg, probably more like 120kg max. The belt size is better at 520mm, the wider the better. Something to consider is the noise on treadmills, cause it won't be quiet. Warranty will come in handy as screws and bolts can be weak/break or just not fit. Make sure you lubricate the belt once a month and it should last longer.
I have a York Treadmill, after 6 years its going strong but I'm starting to slip on my strides as the belt slides to one side. It doesn't have springs like these,s so I have no idea whether that helps running on treadmills or not. Good luck. Maybe post a review after a month of use.

    Why not join a gym?

  • Hard rubbish there is always one..

But on a serious note, have a look at the Harvey Norman Big Buys at Springvale Homemaker Center, they have around 7-8 to choose from from $150 upto thousands.

  • I wouldn't go near stuff from Asia as there's a good chance the electrical noise suppression is inadequate. Ads I've seen on ebay, including from the LifeSpan, try all the tricks in the book to make you think it's passed Australian testing.

My treadmill would pump so much noise back into the mains that my ADSL internet speeds would drop from 2MB/s down to about 64KB/s. Had to spend $150 on a suitable power filter.

  • Thanks for the feedback - if I get something I'll post here to let you know how it went.

With 2 little ones I've little time and the most efficient thing I can do for exercise is jogging - put on shoes and run out the door. Don't have time to go to gym at this stage of my life.

I know lots of them end up as expensive cloths airers but I don't think that will be the case. I already jog (and have for some time) and just want something for when I can't get out for a "real" jog.

    Thanks again. :)
