Best Car Insurance (Comprehensive) for P-Plater/under 25 driver

Hi everyone

Just purchased my first car this week and looking to get insurance. I'm under 25 and still a P-Plater so expecting it to be $$$.

Despite this, does anyone have any tips of a good insurance prices for P-Platers/Under 25s?

  • Justcar insurance will probably take you.

    Be prepared to pay.

    • yep, justcar and then pump up that excess to keep the premiums down. that's what i did couple years ago. my excess was $3k for evo6 and premiums were $1.7k (no demerits, no accident and no claim history)

no demerits, no accident and no claim history

        …but still an Evo 6.

  • You could try Insurance Box. It uses car telematics to give you a lower price if you are a good driver. I haven't tried it but it was in the news recently.

But then you can't have any fun in the twisties :(

  • Good question but sorry I don't have an answer but perhaps a suggestion. Try Youi; myself (older experienced driver) and mother have used them for the past few years and find them the best cost wise. I ring around every year to see what better deals are on offer but end up staying with Youi. They usually give you several options on excess that may reduce/increase your premium. Let us know how you get on; I have an 18 yo Learner Driver at home …

  • I'm not even a P plater, I'm still on my Ls.
I got insurance through Suncorp. My mother has house insurance with them, so I got a 10% family discount.
Amazingly surprised at the quote I got, $989 annually(with discount) for my MR2 Spyder.

    • Gee that is going to be a big increase for me; I pay only $413.29 for myself only annually (AAA rating and no drivers under 25 quote). Thanks for the figure; gives me something to work out as I look into quotes for my son (L plater).

The learner driver books from Vic Roads suggest that Ls have lower incidence of accidents than other drivers so it makes one wonder about the high insurance quotes. I can understand about the Ps (especially first year) drivers being a higher risk though.

      • All of the other insurance agencies were quoting $2-3k, I was happy with paying what I got.
There are other companies that insure for less, the reviews are scary though.

You might be best off talking to a rep personally. Bring up your impeccable driving record, not to mention your flawless ability to teach your son how to hone his driving skill and discipline… Maybe they'll lower their rates. :)

        • I shall give mine a call next week to see what they can offer. So far sounds rather an expensive exercise.

I don't think my stress levels will qualify me for "flawless ability" lol. No one in my family (or my boyfriend) would help me with driving lessons way back when. I had to do things the hard way and wait until I could afford regular driving lessons.

Feel sorry for those kids who have no one to help (like me) but there is a program I(Victoria) out there these days to help them called the L 2 P program:

          http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licences/GetYourPs/Prepa…

          Hope that helps someone :o)

        • I'm in the same boat as you were, that's why I'm still on my Ls.
I'm in Queensland though, there isn't any program like that here. I read that there are being funds allocated to future development of a program like that though, so that's good for future learners.

    • L platers have lower risk than P platers as L platers would be supervised and less likely to do something crazy.

  • SGIO will ensure a learner driver/P plater for free on an existing policy. I am not paying anything extra for having my stepdaughter on my policy. As long as there are no accidents, it will cost you nothing. I was amazed to be able to get such a deal, most companies were charging heavily.

    • Thank you for the information. Will check what my insurance has to offer in comparison.
