    I have a post-paid telstra (business) account. I also have a Galaxy tab 2 device (wi-fi only)

Can someone tell me (sorry to ask this again, I'm sure it has been asked before) in the easiest way how I can get google play credit from the $30 sim mentioned in this deal but used on my post-paid device, or the wi-fi only galaxy tab 2 device?

And if I get a great answer I promise I'll try and stop doing poor puns in these threads for the next 48 hours!

Use a second phone, or temporarily swap the sim into your main handset.

      • so it's that simple. Swap the prepaid sim into my phone, activate, download games/apps with prepaid credit, then remove sim, pop back post-paid sim, and the apps will still be on my phone?

Ye Gads, I can't believe I couldn't work it out earlier

        • It's great isn't it.

You will need to activate the sim as a long life option so you get $30 of credit that lasts 6 months which can be used for apps. When making an app purchase you will need to select the 'bill my Tesltra account' instead of your card details.

I wonder who is losing money here? My guess is that Telstra and Google must have a deal going on where they both foot the bill somehow. These specials have been happening quite a lot over the last year so it must be in the millions of dollars.

        • but this can only be done a certain number of times, because the government doesn't want individuals having more than a certain number (is it 5?) of pre-paid devices registered against their name?

        • Get a friend/family member to buy them for you.

I think it's 5 active services, so if you deactivate them after you have used the credit it could be fine to buy more than 5. I could be wrong though.

        • can't you transfer up to $20 credit between accounts /SIMs each day? so you could activate up to 5 SIMs, transfer the credit across to one SIM, then deactivate the other SIMs yet retain the theoretical $150 credit on the initial SIM?

        • Do you have to download the apps whilst you have the prepaid sim in the phone, in order to be able to charge it to your prepaid credit?

Or can you activate it in a second phone and then download on your original phone/sim and charge it to the prepaid account?

        • Okay to answer my own question, from Telstra's help it appears that:

          1. You have to be using the sim with the credit attached to it.
          2. You can only purchase from the handset i.e. you can't charge stuff when you are connected to the Play store on another device e.g. your desktop or laptop browser.

So I guess it mean swapping in the prepaid sim whenever you want to purchase something.

        • Will this work with a tablet and a prepaid sim in dongle?

        • +1

ok, I was trying to work out why people weren't stockpiling these cheap SIMs and then buying NEXU 7 tablets etc. but seems you can only spend a maximum of $0 in 1 transaction and no more than $100 a week, otherwise it will force you to use another payment method.

but still damn useful if you're an app or ebook junkie :) or music and movies too I guess.

        • +1

          sigh.. $20, not $0

        • Yeah, I found this limit today too, when I tried to purchase $23.99 (in-app).

  • What's special about UNIV?

    • +1

      just abbreviation of "universal" ?

  • So if I don't use 3gb/mth and want a longer lasting plan for my iPad mini what would the best option be to utilise this deal?

    • Check Aldi. In fact, that's why I think Telstra are having these promos.

      • But isn't Aldi using Optus networks? It seems likeTelstra doesn't even bother to compete with Optus&Vodafone on the price.

        • No telstra (not full network).

      • I live in the country. Normal Telstra is preferable! :)

  • YES! So much easier buying from officeworks than Post office. Thank you to the guys who pricematched officeworks for this price :)

Btw @op, this is not an officeworks sale, i think after they're pricematched/beaten for the same thing a few times, they pricematch for the duration of the sale. It's happened many times before.

    • +2

Yes me- got one for $9.50 this morning!

  • Thanks op. Just bought some at officeworks liverpool. ONLY normal sim scanned at $10. The pink pack Microsim still scanned at $30

  • is this only for ipads or can i use it on a android and configuring the APNs?

    • It should work on the android tablets as well.

      • nice thx

  • If I want 12 months of 3gig a month data in a phone that only takes a normal sim can I buy 12 of the ipad ones then something like this:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nano-SIM-Card-to-Micro-Regular-Fu…

And get 3gb / month for $10 a month swapping the sim each month?

Or is there an easier way. Thanks

    • If I were you I would buy a bulk of Telstra prepaid sim card and use a new sim card each month. After all the phone numbers (yes, even tablets have own phone numbers) aren't that matter for the tablets.

By the way, that sim card adapter doesn't work well from my experience.

  • Which one is used for the telstra 4G modem from a few months ago?

  • +1

Some Whirlpool users have said in the past that Telstra can reduce the 3gig ipad data if you use the sim in a device that is not an iPad. It is suggested that the network reads the IMEI and uses this to determine what device you are using.

Does anyone have experience of this happening currently ?

    • Correct me if I'm wrong..
the network reads hard devices? sounds like privacy breaching if it's true.
I have been doing this for the last 5 months until now in Motorola Xoom first generation with no single hassle.

They have their rights to reduce the 3GB to only 700 mb because it's stated on Terms and Condition that you are advised to insert the "Sim Starter Kit For Ipad" in Ipad-only device. However, unless you tell them literally, no way they know your devices/IMEI.

      • Your mobile device advises the cell tower of its IMEI when it connects to it, that's how operators are able to blacklist stolen phones. You don't have to tell them, but your device literally tells the operator its IMEI.

If anyone's planning on using this for the $30 credit with Google Play Store, be very careful not to get the Pre-Paid Micro SIM for the iPad that has 3GB of data. Even though it has the words $30 written on the packaging, the SIM card itself does not have $30 credit with it. Learnt that the hard way, unfortunately.

    • I think you should have bolded not to get.

It's pretty important. Some people have managed to get the 3gb converted to $30 credit after speaking to a Telstra rep, whilst others haven't and got stuck with 3gb of data.

No one wants to be stuck with 3gb of data when they wanted $30 of apps.

    • Even if people are doing it successfully, I believe it's a kind of social engineering hack.

  • I have just brough a few from both officeworks and post office. In both situation they ask me to fill out a form. I assume that is normal and only act as a register for your purchase??

    I

    • It's actually the law when buying a sim in Australia. It's a bloody stupid law but big brother needs to make those metadata connections between all their subjugates citizens.

Poor tourists. Between this and Myki, Melbourne is a pretty bad place to come for international visitors.

Just talk to one of my colleague who is really the numbers man in these kind of mobile credit game and he alert me that even at $10/Sim with $30 credit, they are still not great value if you have a medium to high usage pattern.

To start as people has mentioned before you activate first sim in Long Life and change to Simplicity, then transfer credits from the other discounted sims from creditu2me. Easch sim you can transfer $29 because you can only do max $10 a day and Telstra charge you 25c for the transfer.
This plan is very good for people have irregular usage because it is very flexible and you don’t pay for extras that you don’t use. However…..

I have just got about 6 of these sim packs cost me in total $60. In my case I use about 1-1.5g data a month plus about 2-3 2 mins call per day. At $20 per 700 mb for data and 30c per two min call. These sim packs will last me only for two months. Making my actual cost per month at $30. Another $5 I can get Aldi with unlimited call and 2.5g of data.

Like others mention, extremely good value if you use as data sim or you are a low user and need flexibility.

    • For 49 dollars you can get the 3gb data addon. With 4 packs you have $116 dollars of credit. You can get a 3gb data add on per month and that'll leave you with $18 dollars for calls. If you are a very heavy phone user between 6pm-6am you can also consider using the encore instead of simplicity for calls.
Either way, with 4 packs for 2 months that works out to be 20 dollars a month for 3gbs of data on full telstra 4g network.
Better than 35 dollars on aldi I'd say.
You need a better numbers man :P

As you said it is very flexible so if you understand how it all works chances are there is a way you can make it work for you.

      • Encore doesn't work that way as u need to activate a new sim and new number every month. Some people use a duo sim phone to make that work, but I have two phones already and has no plan to get a duo sim phone.

$49 3G pack is nice if you actually can use that much. But I only use about 1G a month.

    • Get a new numbers man. $20 for 700MB and $10 for calls means $30 credit a month.

But you got that credit at almost 1/3 of the price, so its actually costing you ~$10.34 a month.

  • I was planning to buy a few of these to set a family member up with wireless data. If I simply activate the sim online, choosing the ipad option do I get 3GB or is there some other steps? Thanks.

    • That's the way it works, provided you are using it in an iPad.

  • It's annoying having to fill out the form, never had this happen when I was buying from bigw!

    • i've never been asked to fill out a form at either ow or bigw when buying these sim packs :)

    • I bought an optus $2 sim from bigw the other day and they did an ID check - needed proof of ID like a drivers licence. They have to do this by law.

The only place I've had to actually fill in a paper form was the post office when buying a phone - really strange as other places I've bought phones they don't do any checking at all! This was in a small country town (dropped my htc in a bucket of water in the caravan !!!)

    • Depends on your luck with the person at the counter. I bought from 1 hardly normal and 2x Officeworks last time. Got asked once to fill that form at one of the Officeworks.

  • Just FYI, already out of stock at Officeworks North Sydney, and Dick Smith North Sydney said they cannot price match this one since it is below cost price.

    • I got the last two :)

  • Went to officeworks this morning but it was sold out cos a guy bought 9 of these earlier in the morning…

    • I wonder if store managers "hide" them, say only release a small amount every day.

  • Got 2 packs, colleague used his Coles employee discount card (5% off), total amount paid $19. Happy day! thanks OP.

  • For anyone in Melbourne CBD, Elizabeth Street Auspost is out as is Law Courts and Officeworks at QV.

They do have lots at Collins Street Auspost though and they make you fill out a form for each one.

The other CBD OW are showing "low stock" which usually means NO stock!

  • Couldn't find the Nano Sim Starter Kit for iPad. Can I use the Pre-paid Nano Sim Starter Kit (Green packaging) and activate it as for an iPad?

  • Managed to find six of the iPad Nano SIM's at two different OW stores today. One store completed the form, one didn't - the process isn't consistent.

  • They were sold out at Petersham NSW store, and I bought the last one at the Glebe NSW store (had to fill in the form), so skip both those stores if you're looking trying to buy this.

  • I'm getting an iPad Air when the rush dies down. I have access to Wifi almost everywhere I go so I foresee very light usage so 3Gb should do me for the few occassions when I don't have access to Wifi.
I want a nano SIM with as LONG expiry of data services as possible. Can someone please spell out what I have to do once I buy the TWO(?) starter packs? Hopefully that should do me for a year :)
I read about "long life modes" etc etc!? I would hate to activate the SIM then find it expires in 30 days :(
I also notice OW appears to have two different nano SIM starter packs? What is the difference, if any?
I hope someone knowledgeable is still watching this OLD thread :)

    • If you want a full years access to Telstra data on an iPad you will need to buy 12. The 3GB data allowance on the iPad SIM's expires after 30 days. Otherwise get a regular prepaid SIM and pay for the data you use via recharging (not cost effective).

  • I think I just bought the last one from Hornsby Officeworks, not sure if they're going to be getting more

  • Can you use the Pink (Multi Fit Starter) or Orange (UNIVERSAL STARTER KIT) starter packs, for the iPad to get 3gigs of data?

  • Just picked up a few from my local Officeworks. FYI, the micro skit kit is not on special (still $30). It is also in a pink packaging (but larger than the multi fit sim starter kit).

How do you actually pay for Google Play Music All Access with your Telstra credit? Google support says it is not possible.

Edit: Nevermind, it seems I can!

Just tried it out. Make sure you click on 'Payment Options' and select 'Bill to my Telstra' before clicking on the 'Subscribe' button. It's started the free 30 day trial for now. So I'll only get billed in December. Hope that helps you guys out. I was looking for some options to use my unused prepaid credit. Was also considering buying some comics on Comixology.

  • Alright just want to know if this will work and any flaws in this how to get a cheap plan with telstra method. [im with vodafone at the moment and iphone 4s contract is ending in 3 days.]

    MEthod:
    1. Buy a couple of $10 telstra starter kits (microsim starter pack)
2.port voda number into telstra sim card
    3. select longlife plan
4.change to simplicity plan for cheaper rates and to maintain 180 day expiry as those have suggested above
    5. transfer credit from other recharge starter kits into longlife or should i say(now simplicity plan) via creditme2u or online chat.
    6. once 180 days end i shall port my number into another telstra sim card repeating steps 2 to 6

by the way i will be buying data packs each month with my recharge credits, are data packs charged per kb? it says Pay As You Go data is 10c/mb charged per mb on the simplicity plan (what about data packs???)

  • Got mine activated. Successfully bought a $1.99 app using my Telstra credit, however also got charged download data costs.
Is there a way to avoid this? I was under the understanding you have to be off wifi to bill to the Telstra account, or is this incorrect?
