Half Height Video Card for HTPC

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a decent half height video card for a HTPC. I don't need anything fancy, but must have:
*HDMI
*No fan- just heatsink
*Capable of 1080 video

I have looked at the Sapphire 5450 - http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/product_ind… which is around $30 to $35.

Anyone have an opinion?

  • That's what I have use for the last 6 months, pretty good and cheap. It can play some modern games in low setting (eg borderland 2)

    Cheers,

    • Seems to be the go then. Half height cards are not very common and it fits into my price range.

  • Depending on the rest of your system you might be better off with a good intel GPU on a CPU. A 5450 is around the same as a HD3000 GPU. Of course if you don't care about games any Intel HD GPU is fine. If you do care a HD4000 will outperform this anyway.

The other option is the AMD APUs.

    • I have dug up an old amd board that doesnt have hdmi, just vga. Specs are ok, dual core 2ghz processor with 4gb memory. I used to run this same system 2 years ago with a full height card. Went well as htpc. I dont want to spend more money than necessary and 35 bucks seems like the cheapest way to get hdmi to the board.

It is currentlybeing used as a nas with a 260u 25watt dual core psu. I am looking at swapping my current htpc, fm1 with 8gb and more sata slots and using that as the nas board. It runs around 40watts whereas current nas is57watt at the wall.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands…..

bought that recently for my yet to be completed N54L.

installed it last night but yet to setup the pc. Has a small fan, but should be ok.
