Buffalo Linkstation Pro Quad Diskless 4 Bay NAS $169 + Ship - HT

200

43 units available at Harris Technology at time of posting - I think shipping is around $10-$12 from memory. Normal price is around/above $200 so if you're wanting to get a simple NAS for storage/media streaming then to me it's a no brainer :) Just Add Disks
I got this in an email today. I've got one of these and I love it! I recently gained root access on it and have set it up to get daily hard drive temperature graphs on its internal site. I MAY get another one, but I still have a HP N40L in its box :( Anyways!

    I've got 2 x 2tb and 2 x 3tb in mine, but I don't see why it won't support a 4tb. I'd bet that someone here has some 4tbs in there?

Edit - here you go: http://www.buffalo-technology.com/en/products/storage-device…

From Specs page on that site:

    Internal Hard Drives
    Number of Drives 4
    Drive Interface SATA
    Hard Drive Capacities 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, 4TB
    Total Capacity 0TB,4TB, 8TB, 12TB, 16TB
Supported Operation Mode RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD

I am pretty sure it supports 4TB in one of the later firmware updates. I have one of these units and the hardware is actually pretty powerful for the price. But the best thing is how much they update the software / firmware on these things. Constantly being updated with new fixes and / or features. More so than i find even the thecus and Qnap which are considered a higher range.

    • What kind of speeds do you get with it? Consumer NAS are usually terribly slow.

      • +1

I regularly get 60-80meg/second reads and writes via Cat5e cable going through a switch and a router :) more than happy with it :)
I have 2 x RAID1 configs in my one if that helps you make your decision

        • That's pretty good; what I was thinking about are the NetGear ones that are 10MB/s. No I'd be using RAID5.

        • That's like my DLink DNS323 :(

So for those who have this. It's a good piece of kit? No issues?

If it was dating your daughter you'd be ok with it?

    • +2

I would definitely recommend it for its price point, its really good and pretty fast. Its interface / software isnt the best compared to the more premium Brands but they are far pricier. It hasnt given me any issues yet and i have been using it for a few years.

    • I have been using it for a few years and it has never given me any issues. Apart from NAS functions, I am also using the squeeze box server feature.

Looks like I just got myself my xmas pressie :) #nerdalert

Just ordered mine… How waiting for HDD bargains…

  • +2

Thanks.. ordered :) now where to find 4 x 4tb disks for cheap…

    • I'd recommend if you don't want to get the enterprise drives (not offered for 4TB yet I don't think) you look at the WD RED drives which are NAS optimised.

  • +1

Thanks XeSSiV! Just grabbed one. Looks like just what I need!

  • Only 2 x USB 2.0, I know it's a NAS, but still it would have been better if this had a usb 3.0 port.

    • You'd pay at least double for USB3… Besides, USB2 does the job for its purpose, but yes, it would have been nice to have USB3 lol

I think this one is slightly more reasonable. Same specs(CPU, RAM), 2 Hard drive bays(up to 8 tb), RAID 0, 1 enabled, bitTorrent client for just $98 + shipping. Why would someone pay extra $70 more for a basically same product, unless you want Raid 5, 10…

    • +5

Or unless you want 2 more drive bays available?

    • +1

and only Raid-1 as the protection - that alone is worth more than $70!

  • can I wirelessly send files from my PC to this box and can this box hook-up to my smart TV for AVI playback?
I'm sick of putting AVIs on a USB stick and plugging into PC, then walk over to TV and plug it in , blah, blah!
    any answers greatly appreciated.

    • If your smart tv can do DLNA then you can do it. It plugs in to your home network, so it's available for any device [computer/phone/tv] to connect to. Also, if you've got WDTV/AppleTV boxes etc it'll work through them too :)

  • Great find, just ordered one myself. $13.84 shipping just for others' reference

  • was thinking more of N36L or N40L, even N54L……for around the same price……

  • Don't know why, it still charges me shipping for pickup :(

edit: changes to $0 when you get to the confirmation screen!

  • Got told out of stock everywhere other than N Ryde (may not last long)..

  • How quiet is this thing?

  • I was about to buy this one, but the reviews on Amazon don't look good.
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFALO-LinkStation-Performance-Networ…
Sigh, might look for another NAS then.

    TL;DR - 60%+ of the reviews are 1 star
    - many of those reviews talk about unrecoverable data loss within 2 years of operation

    • Yup reviews on most sites is also poor.
The fact that they don't clearly list the cpu speed of amount or RAM made me pass on buying this even though its very cheap for a 4 port NAS. Its most like an expensive paperweight!

  • specs are easy to find, took me less than a minute :-

    http://www.buffalo-technology.com/en/products/storage-device…

    CPU
    Marvell 88F6282, 1.6GHz ARM
    RAM
    DDR3-1066MHz, 256MB RAM

  • +1

I know I havent had any issues with it thus far neither have 2 other people who bought it alongside me, and its been a few years now. BUT I dont think we use the RAID features, rather we use it as standalone separate drives. As well as some of the extra apps it has, so maybe the RAID part has issues i am not sure.

    • Stand-alone drives was my plan… I have my backups off-site :)

  • Has anyone got notification that their order has shipped?

    • Mine arrived the next day. Got an order confirmation email then a separate despatch email.

    • Mine arrived yesterday in Melbourne. Very happy with the aesthetics of the device (small form factory).

  • Put 2x 4TB drives in and connected it last night. Looking forward to playing with it over the next few days.

  • This is unfortunately sold out now. Was about to buy one too :(
