The first two games listed are made by Remedy the last one is purely Rockstar. Therefore the difference between the first two and the third Max Payne released is quite apparent.

James McCaffrey is still voicing Max and the cinematics retain those comicbook-inspired, storyboard panel influences from the first two as well. The story (without going into too many spoilers) has central to it, another damsel-in-distress that Max Payne wants to avenge.

It's less neo-noir but still a very respectable game on it's own and as part of the greater trilogy. The realism and attention to detail in the Brazilian setting are off the charts; the accents, language, level design, characters and the politically/socially-inspired story themes are Hollywood-calibre.

There are plenty of valid instances where a developer-shift or IP buy-out part way through a successful gaming franchise has ruined it; but this is not one of them in my opinion.

Max Payne 3 is superior to Max Payne 2, which was too short and not as serious and adult enough unlike the first or third games. It featured some patently bizarre, silly and repetitive environments; like that carnival funhouse or those weird dream sequences. It was on the whole, less neo-noir and serious, and more like a linear GTA clone in terms of gameplay and environments.

The first was for its time and still is, a revolutionary third-person shooter with a revolutionary story.

May I also add that the Max Payne franchise was bought by Take-Two Interactive (who owns Rockstar) almost right after Max Payne 1 was released; hence from the second installment on, it's been a Rockstar-published and controlled affair, though Remedy Entertainment did still develop Max Payne 2 predominantly.

Also (as I realised), the long-standing theme of betrayal by supposed friends and allies of Max Payne reoccurs in Max Payne 3, as does the conspiratorial-perspective of higher authority and blurred lines between organised crime and corrupt law enforcement.

All in all, Max Payne 3 remains incredibly faithful to it's roots for a modern shooter, and it still remains punishingly difficult just as the first game was; it hasn't been dumbed down difficulty-wise. Taking issue with Max Payne 3's story being too divergent or the re-imagined protagonist/setting being too unfamiliar is like complaining that Star Wars Episode 1 is not exactly like Star Wars Episode 6. They're separated by a few hundred years of events.

Max Payne 3 is set 14 years after the events of the first game. What did you want, for Max to be exactly the same, in the same exact setting as the first game, fighting more mob goons?

My only problem with Max Payne 3 was that the game itself felt very different. The first two got the level design and action right so that bullet time and shoot dodge were the way to clear out rooms and play the game.

Somehow in Max Payne 3, the shoot dodge felt weak, because, it was easier to hide behind cover and shoot enemies without ever using bullet time. Maybe Max Payne is just getting to fat, bald and old to do that acrobatics…

Whether it's the dominant strategy or not, slow-motion diving is BAD-ASS.

        • I agree. I loved the first two, but stopped playing 3 because I really didn't like the way the controls felt. I felt like I was fighting the controller more than the enemies on the screen.

Heads up, steam on win 7, I couldn't get max payne 2 to work. There's lots of comments about that.

    • No idea what you did, but unlike Max Payne 1, Max Payne 2 ran on Win 7 with no extra troubleshooting required.
Then again, I didn't play the Steam version of the game; I still have an original copy that I patched manually. Try some of the fixes suggested here:
      http://steamcommunity.com/app/12150/discussions/0/8289397971…

Max Payne 1 requires some simple hacks to convert the sound files into a format Win 7 understands, and if you prefer, to enable it to support widescreen resolutions (though remember, the game is actually supposed to played in 4:3 aspect ratio, since it doesn't have native 16:9 support, hence the game will appear slightly stretched):

      • Thanks Amar, but didn't do anything special outside of downloading and installing the game files (albeit via steam). I did try the workarounds but none resolved the issue I was having of the application not loading.

Seems from the fixes and forums I'm not the only one to have the issue but obviously it doesn't affect everyone, and having the original game files seems to increase the likelihood of it working.

  • If bought before this offer expires can we do the download at a later date??

Unfortunately i am not on unlimited data download, resets 7th Nov.

    • Yep, you only need to redeem the codes at Steam.

  • Brilliant games!! Must buy.

I think so. I forgot to use the coupon but for $9.79 it's a bloody great deal. Fingers crossed Windows 8.1 doesn't also ruin this game with input lag issues.
