Best mobile broadband modem for regional areas?

Do some mobile broadband devices provide better coverage than others? A friend bought a Telstra Elite wifi modem last week and the reception on it is poor, but then it's generally patchy on her phone as well.

Telstra Elite modems have a spot to attach an external antenna for extra gain.
In fact, they pretty much all do.

If you're in a remote region, a +6db antenna should be the first thing on your list.
Remember, being testra and remote, you might be on 850mhz, so make sure it works for that frequency (the antenna).

This will work if you're within 2100mhz range:

Actually….. judging by this antennas specs, the above one might do both frequencies….
But if you like to play it safe:

    That one claims both :)

the sierra units will soon be offered on Telstra prepaid, AC760S ("portable wifi")

really good unit, have one myself.

thats all the details I have for now

  • Use Virgin wifi at home for $39 12GB. Can purchase top ups for $15 per 1 GB if required. Have some problems lately; apparently a tower undergoing maintenence (Cranbourne) so sometimes a problem. Personally I think it is a congestion problem though. No roaming charges with Virgin though and worked really fast at Mt Hotham and Echuca. Mother has Vodafone wifi, again $39 for 12GB, which has no problems but can get stung with roaming charges, which is why I haven't changed over to them. There is always a short period that you can opt out of a contract if the service doesn't live up to expectations. I have found customer service support from both these companies excellent.

    • Thanks, but they can't get reception on Optus, so are stuck with Telstra.

      • Please report back if you use a $10 antenna. I'd love to know the outcome.

  • Ps. Kogan is offering TP-LINK 300 Mbps universal wifi range extender today for $39 (limited stock) with free shipping.
