  • Do they also sell nano sims?

    • Not specifically mentioned, depends on store?

  • Not sure how people take advantage of these…..

It there is a way to apply the $30 to your existing prepaid number? or do you just active and transfer $29.25 using credit me2u ?

    • +1

      me2u on longlife prepaid babe

      • Thanks :)

      • +26

Buy 2. Activate one as Cap Encore and use the $250 Bonus, Free Talk and Text after 6pm and 400mb of data. Activate another as Long Life then switch to Simplicty. You still have your 6 months expiry. Transfer credits from Cap Encore to Simplicity card over 3 days, leaving 25 cents on Cap Encore. Use Cap Encore card for 30 days using bonus credits then throw away. The 2nd Simplicity card now has original $30 plus $29 transfered and can be used for 6 months.

By doing this your calls are only 15 cents a minute using the Simplicity instead of 78 cents plus 35 cents connection fee using Long Life.

        Simples……………………………..

          Great work.

Does this work for the 3gig iPad plan?

        • That's brilliant. Is there any way to make use of the Telstra $10 sim that is selling for $1 at idroid.net.au?

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/120424

        • +1

I think those ones a pretty much worthless don't work for android credit or much else really.

        • can you suggest second phone to use the cap encore ?

looking for something small and good battery life and possibly act as wifi hotspot :)

        • if you don't mind Gingerbread or lack of install space
Lg L3 e400f at woolies for 34.50 plus 1.65 unlock code on ebay
          or
If you want ICS the Huwaawai (however you spell it) y201 pro from coles
for 39.90 plus $5 unlock on ebay. Theres also a user on here that does the unlocks too but I don't remember the name.

I think both do wifi hotspot natively both are super cheap
and good battery life is relative to what your doing.
if your only using those phones as phones they will excellent battery life in sleep mode.

        • I use the Y201 and it works alright. I had to use Wake Lock Manager and set it to Partial Wake Lock. Otherwise the tethering keeps dropping off. Battery lasts half a day under this setting. I have it charged when I get to work so it hasn't been too big an issue, considering the dedicated wifi hotspot devices don't lasts that long either.

Definitely better to get this than a wifi 3g router thing. It runs the telstra My-Prepaid app which tells you how much you've used. And you can use it for calls and SMSes.

        • That sounds really good, but I'm a little lost how does that work with an existing telstra number?

        • I don't really understand the switching from Long Life to Simplicity part.

I know you do it for the cheaper call rates but simplicity has a 60 day expiry. Why would your old LL credit retain their expiry after you change to Simplicity?

Also, If I want to buy a couple more but still rtain the 6month credit expiry do I just change from simplicity to LL then switch back to simplicity again?

        • thanks a lot Scaregdearimasu

          Will check those out!

Will only use it to make a call and wifi hotspot when away from home / wifi which is rare :)

        • no problem just make sure whichever one you get will hotspot before you buy I haven't played with the y201 but think it can just check the side of the box or do some research before hand.

Also take a look at this http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/100632

        • How do you know you still have 6 months expiry after changing over to Simplicity? According to http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/offe… with $30 credit you are entitled only 60 days expiry. It needs $100 recharge to get 180 Days.

        • ITveteran, you can check your expiry via #100# then 2 (balance) or from telstra app 24x7

I can confirm it's 6 mth expiry after changing from long life to simplicity.

        • +1

I couldn't work this out earlier either, but this answer from Telstra FAQ answers your Qns.

"If you change your Pre-Paid offer, you will keep your account balance and its expiry date. New expiry rules will apply for future recharges on your new offer:
-If you recharge on your new offer and your account balance has an expiry period greater than the standard period above it will remain unchanged. However, any recharges within that standard expiry period will have a new expiry date apply.
-We will never shorten your credit expiry date; we will leave it or extend it."

  • When does it start? I wonder if I can return the starter kit I bought from Woolworths last week for $15 (I still have the receipt and the package is unopened)?

    • +3

My starter kit says the following:
"You may return this Starter Kit within 30 days if you have not activated the service."

    • +1

      returned mine this afternoon :)

only kept 1 because it's multifit and my local austpost doesn't have them anymore.

  • Do you need to sign all the paperwork for this? Such a hassel

    • Yes, they'll make you fill out a form for each one. Waiting for JB to match this deal. C'mon JB!

    • +2

All depends. Some had to do hard work. Some just walk out the door as if it was a candy

    • +1

Just bought one like candy as tesse112 suggested. $10 bucks. Except they dont stock too many when i bought mine they only had 2 in total.

  • For those unaware, Telstra $30 SIM kits can be used for $30 of Google Play Credit (Activate as any Pre-Paid offer and buy for the store) of data (Ring them up and tell Telstra that you want to activate it for an iPad).

    • Can also be used on Windows Phone store to buy apps

    • Is the iPad or regular kit better to use as Play store credit, or do they work the same?

      • +2

Do not buy the iPad kit if you want to use it as Play Store credit.

You need to get the pink starter kit and select the long life option during activation.

PowerB is either ignorant or malicious in telling people to buy the wrong product and then activate it in the wrong way to get what they are after. Comments like his should result in a ban in my opinion.

        • +1

what do you mean? YOu can use the ipad activation for google credit (done it many times).

        • Yup it's true you can activate iPad ones for Google credit it a pain though and you have to use 24/7 chat to do it but when you can get those iPad ones for $6 and you get 30$ credit it's worth it.

        • You have. Others have. Others have not, and that was on the basis of reading posts like yours then trying their arse off with Telstra support and ended up wasting money.

          See comments here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115019

It's a finicky process, not guaranteed to work and should not be recommended to others. If you want Google Play credit from these cheap sims then get the starter pack and activate it as the long life option, not the iPad sim and call support to flip a coin as to whether or not you will get to use the credit for the Play Store. No talking to Telstra necessary, no wondering if you will actually get to use your product or not.

        • -2

You CAN use the iPad kit for Google Play Credit. I do it all the time. YOU are ignorant for not having done it before.

        • +1

You have. Other's have had problems and ended up not being able to use the credit even after speaking to multiple reps.

Why would you tell someone to go through all that hassle when they can just by the starter kit? Are you trying to make it hard for people?

        • Notice that that was the iPad 3GB starter kit, not the Telstra $30 starter kit. You cannot use credit on a 3GB Starter Kit, but converting $30 starter kit works fine. (Based on the link you provided above).

        • C0balt is right. I've had trouble getting live chat to do the transfer of credit for me. They say they can activate it as a phone sim, but without any credit.

      • +2

IPad ones more work as you need to use chat support to get then to transfer to Google credit. Standard ones are easier to work with as the online activation process should work without needing anyone's help.

    • Can we use at Apple's App Store?

      • No.

        • :(

        • +10

Time to get with the programme my friend and get a Nexus!

    • Is there a specific process or can I just buy the $30 kit put the sim in and get buying.

I previously purchased a $30 ipad one and didnt get the credit. Thanks

      • The process is to downvote comments like PowerB's comment above so people don't buy the wrong product or follow the wrong procedures.

Then you buy the pink starter kit and during the online activation you select the long life option that states the credit can be used for Google Play Store purchases.

        • My Australia post only had the orange ones, is it the same process?

        • +2

Yep - in previous threads many others have confirmed that these also work as they are the starter kits, but that it's a pain to get the sim card to fit in their phone to use the credit to buy the apps - some took to their sims with scissors.

It's just the iPad ones you need to steer clear of to avoid potentially wasting your money. The pink and orange starter kits will work without issue apart from the size issue.

To buy apps from the Play Store, you will need to actually have the sim in your phone at the time of making the purchase. In the payment options you will see a 'bill my telstra account' instead of a visa or whatever.

        • Thanks, I have a old android phone which takes a full sim so I will use that. Does the $30 credit expire? Thanks for answering all my Q's c0balt.

        • If you activate it under the long life option you will have 6 months to use the credit.

No problem. I just got my hands on the Logitech G710+ deal the other day and enjoy typing on it as it's my first mechanical keyboard.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

        • AWWW YEAH mechanical keyboard CLICK CLAK CLICK CLAK
although if you have loved ones they will hate you.

        • This G710+ is actually a lot quieter than I thought it would be by the youtube videos and the reviews.

It's not that much louder than my Apple chicklet keyboard as long as I don't go bottoming out every key.

    • +2

If you activate it for the iPad then you will get data and no credit for apps or calls.

If you want to use the credit for Google Play then you must call/internet activate it as a long life option.

Please edit your comment so others don't follow your wrong advice.

      • I activate mine for iPad and I can still make app purchases! It comes of the $30 credit on the iPad deal which is used for data!
Also, the original comment that I posted was supposed to be 'or', not 'of', small typo. But the iPad deal can still be used to purchase apps.

  • How long do I have to activate this sim? Can I buy 10, and activate one a month, and transfer the $30 to my prepaid number once a month for 10 months?

    • +1

      @President Bartlett.

Yes you can buy 10 and do what you asked (except you only get $29.25) 0.25x3= total of 0.75 charged by telstra for me2u credit.

(just check the sims have a long expiry b4 purchase…(written on outside of packaging)

      • Thanks. Shall head up to the Post office now.

        • Bought one from Post Office at Castle Hill - expiry was in Jan 2015. These shouldn't be old stock.

    • +1

Each SIM pack has a separate expiry, need to go into the shop and check. You can only transfer max $10 per 24 hrs to another Telstra Pre-paid number.

      • Thanks, appreciate the advice.

Question: is it $10 from OR to a specific number.

        • It's $10 from a specific number.

      • +6

You can transfer $20 per day by transferring $10 through the #100# menu and then transferring another $10 through the Telstra mobile myaccount website on your phone.

        • +1

Oh wow. That's a smart trick if it works. Thanks!

  • +1

I've run out of stuff to buy on Google Play. Any ideas?

    • +6

Buy comics on comixology. Over $500 bought and counting…

ok let me know if I missed anything awesome.

      • Dropbox is free unless I'm mistaken …

I'd add that I've found any app that uses Google or Accuweather to be inaccurate (although they do err on the side of not pissing you off eg. forecasting rain if there's even the smallest chance). I prefer apps that use a BOM data stream such as AU Weather.

Agreed with MX Player Pro but in my experience Dice Player has been crap since v1.8.xx as far as hardware decoding (could be device or GPU specific).

Also Opera is a decent enough mobile browser but really not worth using for the server side optimisation in AU due to terrible latency - at least in my experience. Still prefer Chrome (free) and Dolphin (paid and too hungry on battery for some) as Android browsers though.

And Teamviewer has always seem faster to me in subjective comparisons for a remote desktop solution.

        • Drop box is free. Drop sync has more options.
Dice player is crap except that it lets me do this http://i.imgur.com/Rsyi2OP.png
At least till I get a second tablet.
Opera lets me use my cruddy single core 1ghz phone as a quite speedy browser. Stock browser is slow and laggy.
I'll need to try team viewer put.

  • FYI, Sydney CBD Castlereagh St. post office had no white iPad kits but plenty of pink micro SIM ones left this morning according to the counter staff.

  • Nothing at all on Albert St in Brisbane CBD.

    • Back in stock!

  • Does anyone know if I can transfer the credit to my existing Telstra pre-paid wireless broadband account? That one has a phone number as we'll (think it's just a normal 4G SIM just set up with a different offer)

    • Yes you can do that. I have one of the Telstra prepaid ipad sims in my 4g modem, so when you do a credit me2u transfer on it, you get the ipad data rates which gives you a lot more data than the normal Telstra prepaid wireless broadband accounts.

      • Great, how long does the credit last? Don't you normally have to select a recharge amount like $20, $30, etc. Does this allow you to recharge arbitrary amounts up to $10?

        • +1

The credit only lasts 14 days, but you can do another credit me 2u to keep it active for another 14 days. And you can do any single dollar amount up to $10.

        • Gotcha. What rate can/do you get? Does that mean you can only get 1.95c/MB (or $20 for 1GB)? If so that means activating a new "iPad" is always required to get the most data.

          Recharge Data Rate Data
          $20 1.95c/MB 1GB
          $30 0.98c/MB 3GB

  • I need 12 months data, I see Telstra has $180 for 12GB expiring after 365 days. Could I buy 6 of these and get this recharge?

    • lol you're dreaming.

  • I think Telstra discontinued the white ipad kits as it's no longer on their website. If you can still get it and want to use it for the data only, get it as now the $30 will only give you 700mb instead of the ipad kit which gives 3GB.

    • Ignore, just found the iPad pre-paid still available under their tablet section and not mobile broadband.

  • Hey guys, just wondering if we can use the $30 credit (once we activate sim) to use as $27.50 unlocking fee for Telstra locked phone? Cheers!

    • As far as I know, no. Only for Telstra credit and app purchases.
      EDIT: See reply below :)

    • +2

I can confirm that I was able to unlock using the $30 credit. Called 125 8880. They asked for credit card first, but were happy to take it out of the balance when requested.

      • Brilliant! Good to know!

      • Good detective work.

  • -3

I just cleaned out the bourke st melbourne auspost of these so dont go there to get them.

    • How, I went to my local PO, and they would only sell me one.

      • Yep some are crazy and impose limits. Usually five as then you need to hand over more I.d. but yeah shouldn't really be a limit I mean you want my money right?

  • +6

    It's a trap!

If you buy these, you become a Telstra customer. Beware.

  • I managed to nab one of the micro-SIM iPad starter kits for $10 :)

Quick question, if I am buying an iPad Air that only takes nano-SIM and I want to buy the 365 day expiry 12GB for $180, I assume I'll have to pay an extra $2 for a nano-SIM card first.

How do I then transfer the 3GB available in this starter pack to my existing 12GB, and of course do that trick where the data rate is changed in my favour? Do I do it prior to activation?

    Thanks!

    • +1

      aymal,

You are much better off, by buying 12 of these ie 360 days 36gb for $120. The only drama is each month you have to activate 1 of them.

The shops always have this special, a sim cutter might be a worthwhile investment as well.

    • You should be able to top up $10 every 14 days with credit2u, that makes it roughly $20 a month for 24GB/year.

  • I'm with Optus atm (unlocked gnex), can someone tell how I'd use a telstra pre-paid sim card to purchase applications on the play store? Do I just put in the telstra sim card and buy apps or are there other steps inbetween?

  • I just bought 6 of these. I am not sure how to go about turning this in to the $180 for 12gb option.

Can someone please provide me with some guidance?

    Thanks!

    • +1

      Can't be done

    • +2

You can't convert 6 x $30 SIM's into $180 credit. You'd need 12 of these for 12 months access. You need to activate and change over one new SIM every month. You will get 36GB of data though for the hassle.

  • Just bought 6
    2xpink microsims
    4xorange normal sims

    @ Glendale NSW

They made me fill out 6 forms..
    WTFF???

    • I bought 4 from woolies once and there was space on the form for all the mobile numbers. I'm sure they are the same at all locations selling these sim cards. They also asked for extra ID so I showed my Medibank card. Strange!
