My Internet just died. Can someone smart help me troubleshoot plz before I go insane :/

Hey I've got a Billion 7800N been running great for 2 years, was downloading stuff today and suddenly I lost connection. The DSL light on my modem is still solid green, but the internet light has gone from green and is now steady orange.
Telstra ADSL2+.

System Log shows the following events repeating in a loop:

Jan 01 00:02:18 daemon pppd[893]: PPP: Start to connect …
Jan 01 00:02:41 daemon pppd[893]: Couldn't get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected
Jan 01 00:02:41 daemon pppd[893]: PPP: PPP Server No Response !!!
Jan 01 00:02:41 daemon pppd[893]: Doing disconnect

Any ideas?

  • Tried updating the firmware?

  • Yeah updated earlier this year. It's still up to date :(

  • Reads like as if there's a problem between the modem communicating with Telstra's login and password (PPPoE) session server. Could be a Telstra server side error.

    • That's what I was hoping… quite often my internet problems magically fix themselves over night.
If not I'll attack it again 2mo arvo.
EDIT: Looks like my area (6166) has ADSL problems according to the bigpond status page so that's probably the cause of the problem.

  • It is possible now to buy very basic adsl modems for under $40. I have one sitting in the cupboard all configured and tested, ready to use for occasions like this. So often ISP helpdesks will ask what you have done to troubleshoot a problem. They will try and blame the user or their equipment. If you can say I have swapped the modem then it stops this line of thought immediately.

  • Yeah I've got a spare in the cupboard too. If it isnt fixed when I get home from work that will be my first action to try.

  • Yep, fixed itself by the time i got home from work.

    Cheers guys

    • If it re-offends, try switching to PPPoA instead of PPPoE

      • What's PPPoA, whats the difference to PPPoE?
(feel free to tell me to google it if you are lazy like me ;) )

  • I have had a couple of similar experiences with my line. It is on Telstra hardware at the local exchange. I found that if the line gets a bit screwed up with errors then the only way to sort it out is to power the modem off for at least an hour and then try. Apparently that allows or causes a reset in the Telstra hardware and all is good to go again.
