Buying an Xbox One.... then claiming TRS

Hi guys,

As long as I can fit it into hand luggage, will I be able to claim my GST back?

Also, do I need to take the whole thing, or just the console unit to save baggage weight.

Thanks

  • You'd have to take the whole thing

  • I'm 99.99% sure you don't need to take packaging, no need manuals. I claimed my iPad GST once, just show the guy the iPad, no packaging, no charger …. as long as they can cross check the serial number (which I don't think they did in my case), you should be fine.

  • you can claim it before you go through if you want to include it in your suitcase and have it checked in and not take as hand luggage. just have to arrive earlier

    • The Tourist Refund Service (TRS) is after Immigration Service checks and you have to bring the item as carryon baggage. The item cannot be checked in unless it is restricted under the Liquids, Aerosols and Gels(LAGs)security measure.

On my last trip in October, the queue was held up due to several travellers producing stack loads of receipts (I kid you not), some of which were under $300 and the TRS agent having to speak to their English-speaking friend/relative over the phone to ask them to explain what they were claiming.
The unfortunate TRS agent then had to process each receipt separately. No bulk-refund here.

      • The receipts dont have to be over $300 anymore. The total value from one particular store can be over $300. So, if I bought 3 items for $100, over the 60 day period from the same store (not franchise), you can still claim back the GST.
This is of this year by the way.

But addressing OP's original question, just the console itself should be fine. If they ask where the power pack/ cords are, just say they're in your luggage. I don't think they actually care though.

        • I wasn't aware that you could accumulate receipts from the same store, over a 60-day period, to make up the $300 minimum spend.
          Thanks for that info.
