  • Whats so good about this one compared to the first one that it needed a seperate post?

    • Night vision, full hd(other one is not full hd, only 720)

        Full HD?

        Recording resolution : 1280 x 960/720 x 480/ 640 x 480 pixels

The so called "night vision" is the six IR LED's mounted at the front and they are generally worse than useless.

I have one of these. It is horrible. Claims you can do HD resolution recordings, but there's no setting for it. And like the others said, night vision is just as bad.

  • What purpose do people actually use these for, besides the obvious?

    • These are designed to be in cars and thats pretty much all you use them for, if you want an action cam spend the money on a GoPro or Contour. These dashcams or black boxes are incredibly useful if you live in a big city, although Australia isn't really the target market for these devices. I work mostly in Asia and every car I've been given while overseas is equipped with one. Nearly every car in South Korea is equipped with one of these, where car accidents are more common and liability laws and punishment for traffic accidents involving pedestrians are quite different. Also last time I was in Jakarta they were very popular too.

      • Ok, cheers.

      Great for recording meteor showers.

      • Agree. I think the latest meteor that went down in russia and seen in the news was captured by dash cams and not news cameras.

  • The night vision is a joke. Disregard that feature in any consumer dashcam.

What they mean is having IR lights shining the road ahead and the camera is supposed to pick up the night vision. The problem is those IR lights are piss-weak, only able to shine may be only 10 feet ahead. I mean seriously what is the point of night vision 10 feet ahead of your car? You need at least 50 feet or more vision in front of your car. Not only that, the IR light actually reflect off the front windscreen causing the camera to pick up reflected glare in your video, so your picture is even worse.

A lot of there Chinese dashcam manufacturers include these "night vision" light more for bling factor, people who know it they are completely useless.

It could be useful, just not if using it as a dashcam.

You could use it to find out whose dog is cr*pping in your front lawn at midnight.

You could use it to find out who or what is stealing from your veggie garden/fruit tree under cover of darkness.

Just set it up, in an inconspicuous place, with a gel-cell battery and a regulator. Note that IR usually won't penetrate glass, and remember that this unit is probably not rain-proof.

      • Oops, I remembered wrongly. Long-wave IR, like what PIR sensors sense, won't penetrate glass. Short-wave IR will probably be fine, so you could set this up looking through a window. However, you may get a lot of reflections from the IR LEDs.

Once again, the cheapest unit remotely worth having is http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Car-DVR-K6000-Camera-Video…
it is a rather weak in the dark, you could improve it with EXTERNAL IR floods if you wanted, but quite good in the day. DONT turn on the night vision LEDS as they will just reflect back into the camera off the glass.

  • This product got over 4 stars and after this post, have sold 50 more units, according to the website ticker, even I got one, let me see how it is?

what's going on here????? the Battle of the el cheap Chinese Crash Cams???? THEY ARE ALL CRAP!!! believe me!

  • +3

These are likely fakes / copies of the well known Carcam K2000 model..

Also, it is possible to tell from the specifications whether or not the DVR camera is upscaling. What is upscaling?

Take a close look at the spec sheet, and where it mentions the supported recording resolutions:

    1280 x 960 /720 x 480/ 640 x 480 pixels

The fact that it does 1280 x 960 mean's that the camera records in a 4:3 aspect ratio format.

    A "true" 720p camera would not record in 4:3 (1280 x 960), but in 16:9 (which is 1280 x 720).
If the camera is recording in a 4:3 aspect ratio then it's likely that it is using software interpolation to blow the video image up, usually from a much lesser resolution (such as 640 x 480).
In other words, the manufacturer wants to fool you into thinking it's better than it actually is, and the Shenzhen market loves doing it all the time with DVR's and computer webcams.

If you spot a dash-cam that mentions 1280 x 960 in it's list of supported resolutions, avoid buying it. You'd be better off recording your trip using your mobile phone, since most phones nowadays will do true 720p recording.

Back on topic— while it's a cheap dashcam, it's also a dodgy, shonky piece of kit, which warrants a neg vote. No hard feelings OP :)

    • I can't watch this video without thinking of Ringo Starr on the Simpsons responding to fan mail.

      • Yeah, the voice is a bit of a worry.
