Back up SIM required with a Long expiry date for data

Hello

Currently my primary phone data is BOOST (Tel$tra) Prepay $40/Mth 3GB data unlimited calls no International calls on my Droid phone.

I want to have a backup on a different network mainly for data when I go over my 3GB. I currently carry a pocket wifi unlocked.

Amaysim have $99 for 10GB for 365 days but it seems theres no control to stop it after 10GB used therefore charging 5c/MB large outlay too.

Woolworths $29 45 days 5 GB was perfect however tethering not allowed so no go.

Dodo pay as you go looks like the go. Trying to talk on the ph. is hopeless though here is my thinking / cunning plan will it work ???

Sign up for pay as you go…put sim ($2 cost) in Pocket WF

buy $10=60 day expiry. after 60 days i would choose not to recharge coz i dont need the phone calls (but nice to have)

Can i still use the data if my phone credit has expired?
How long after expiry can I go before I have to recharge again?

I then can buy the $10 = 1GB that lasts 30 days on a need to buy basis

Anyone else got an idea?

Aldi mobile has 365 expiry on credit ($10min) with casual data at 5c/Mb and you could add the 2Gb data pack for $15/30days when you actually need it.
Oh, except it is Telstra too. Oops, I need to read more closely.
I use Optus for my tethering. Their 365day expiry pack is about $130 for 15Gb, but is probably more than you need.

    • This sounds like a great solution..

  • Can i still use the data if my phone credit has expired?

No, Call Credit and Data credit expire together.
Most prepaid SIM's expire if you don't recharge within 6 months.

mskeggs' solution is the best, I doubt you'll find much cheaper.

A few points that may help you, in one way or another:

First of all - I'm not even going to comment much on the Dodo portion of your post, at least as regards whether any of that which you referenced is current and feasible. All I know is that Optus has effectively forced changes recently to Dodo's offers. Others can comment on the detail of those changes.

I briefly took up a Dodo offer about a year ago. Via their dodolns1 APN, I found their data speed to be horribly throttled. No customer service to speak of. If your phone number isn't on the national 'Do Not Call' register, you will get spam phone calls that when googled will show a Dodo linkage.

The Amaysim 10GB pack is a standalone pack. If you do not need to make phone calls via Amaysim when your Boost data is finished, why would keep any credit in your account to be sucked away at data PAYG rates? (5c/MB=$50/GB.) Simply contribute just enough into your Amaysim account to buy the (horribly priced) pack and then use it at your leisure until it's finished.

If you have, by any chance, an active Woolworths sim, your in luck (otherwise, no, Woolies are done).
As long as you're using an Android to tether, there is ample evidence to suggest that nobody who tethers has had any problems on the Woolies plan.

I hope some of that helps.
Oh, and most prepaids (with data aspect involved, but with no specific reference to a longer expiry - like Aldi) will see your account die if you don't recharge or otherwise add credit in 90 days - but it does vary - so check T's & C's.

    • As long as you're using an Android to tether, there is ample evidence to suggest that nobody who tethers has had any problems on the Woolies plan.

Woolies actively advertised tethering as a feature on the handsets they sold…So denying tethering is at best false advertising. I'm not convinced they can tell anyway.

      • Apple entered a nasty agreement with telcos to allow inate tether tracking. Same does not apply to Android. Only close data-packet analysis can reveal tethering - apparently. Optus unlikely to bother, especially on a plan like the Woolies one (that they run completely, incidentally - and always have).

    • Thank you Tas for your clear and articulate response.
And yes, Dodo is horrid and most likely sells on our personal information to data mining companies which explains the spam.

By the way, nicetazzy1, I agree with your strategy of having a backup sim on another network.

After Redbull and then Kogan folded, and anticipating something along the lines of the just announced data cut on Aldi, I went out of my way to get a backup to my main Optus sim.
For me that was a separate postpaid mobile plan from Transact - on Vodafone. That Redbull sim used to rescue me when the Optus connection failed.

  • $5 ALDI starter gives you $5 Credit and 365 day expiry. Load some data or credit as needed within that year.

    • op wants non-telstra

I want to have a backup on a different network

      • If OP wants a decent data connection, good luck with the rest.

  • If you did want to try Dodo/Optus,
    Grab a Dodo $100/365 day recharge. (or 4x $20/90day)
    https://m.dodo.com/PrePaidMobileRecharge.aspx?value=100

If you need data, you can use your credit ($10) to buy the 1Gb/30day data.

I'm currently on Dodo for my mobile & I use my pre-paid credit to buy 1Gb data blocks.

I tether with Woolworths pre-paid all the time.
