  • how long does it take for delivery?

    • +4

Lol I don't care - I just got 6 for ~$22 delivered! Free shipping by the way - Cheering!
1 for me, 1 for dad, 2 for uncles, 2 for cousins. Sorted!

      • +5

6 torches? You live up to your name :)

    • +2

I think it was about 3 weeks.

    • Estimated delivery: Nov. 6, 2013 - Nov. 18, 2013

      • A warning to those contemplating on placing a large order:

The reason for the variation in the reviews, is because they are shipping different product at different times, likely all Cree Quality Control rejects. I made orders of 3, 5 and 7 flashlights in sequence. The order of 3 was great and resulted in my decision to make the two subsequent orders. The order of 5 were labeled Sipik and mostly junk, the order of 7 was unlabeled but acceptable.

        • +5

Cree has nothing to do with the quality control of flashlights that contain their LEDs. The LEDs themselves, especially the XR-Es that we're talking about here, are simply very cheap, especially when purchased in the high volumes that Chinese flashlight manufacturers deal in. Those cheap (but still very decent) LEDs are then paired with even cheaper (and not usually very decent) drivers and hosts, and that's where the quality control issues lie.

Purchasing these flashlights, mostly referred to as SK68 clones, has always been a lucky dip, and probably always will be. But even in spite of all that variation, I've never had one that I didn't think was worth at least $3.80.

  • +1

Any idea of run time? If it really is a 7W LED - using 1.2V nominal AA batteries, current would be over 5 amps and even an Eneloop 2AH will only last 20 minutes.

    • +3

You'd be surprised at how long 20 minutes of use is, especially on a pocket light.

      Also, I'd wager its 4 to 5w

      • This^

      • I've seen 7w using a Li-ion battery hot off the charger, but only one of the SK68 clones I've owned ever measured that high. Mostly they're in the ballpark you've outlined, and often lower when only using AA batteries.

    • Also, takes lithiums too. It'll be amazing at 3.7v!

    • Can a AA even supply that sort of current?
Add on loss for voltage conversion

EDIT: how do i undo my neg? Its one of those bloody 'multi item' auctions.
    It is a deal. +++++

    • try selecting the color.

    • click on votes at the top of the page and revoke the neg

  • Ordered 9 for about $35AUD.

will make good gifts. One will go in the car. One will go on the motorbike. 3 or so in the emergency kit (it is storm season…)

    • Hope you ordered 9 batteries (@$US7.60) each as well!

      • See my comment just below, those batteries may not really be necessary.

  • +12

Could someone shine some light on the performance of this torch?

    • +11

      that's a bright question

      • +12

        Illuminating response.

        • +12

don't leave us in the dark here

        • +8

I hope you're all beaming at the flood of puns we've just had; it's quite intense if you ask me.

        • +8

          Very enlightening, I would say.

        • +8

I should have been upset when my flashlight stopped working, but in fact I was delighted.

      • Oh c'mon, don't dull the mood! I think you need to light-en up a bit

  • +1

Damnit, why did I not check here first?! Just ordered two from ebay for $4.78 each after one of mine looks to have burnt out and lo and behold see this on the front page!

Oh well, more on the way. Thanks OP! :-)

Edit: Just be careful which company you deal with as per these reviews:
    http://www.amazon.com/review/R38VNY1PPHRU1M/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt…

    http://www.amazon.com/review/RC0HYGDIAOIZH/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt/…

    • Not sure if Amazon has a 'complaints' service like Paypal??

    • The reviewer in the second link states that there's very little difference in performance between the Li-Ion and LSD NiMh batteries. I've been happy with my torch running on one NiMh for occasional use.

  • The top reviews don't seem comforting. Seems like it's a bargain when you actually get the torch specified. http://www.amazon.com/review/R38VNY1PPHRU1M/ref=cm_cr_dp_tit…

  • Scary. I have my CC stored with Amazon - it makes it just too easy to buy stuff. I've already go 5 and just ordered 3 more!

  • These are very sturdy and bright. The ability to zoom or flood is great.

    Good units.

However, even on a fully charged Eneloop Glitter AA, the run time is low, less than 30 mins.

Very handy to have with LSD batteries like Eneloops.

    • -1

Get some decent 14500 batteries and you'll get much better life — and probably much brighter performance too. (The only problem is that good quality 14500 batts will cost a fair bit more than the actual torch.)

      • Runtime will generally be longer with AAs, but more lumens with 14500.

      • This, if you use AA's you won't get the 300 lumen output listed. The output will depend on what battery you use. The manufacturer will usually only list the highest one.

        • Excatly - I use my Sipik (of which this is a clone) as an every-day-carry, so use AAs for extended runtime. But a 14500 does make it noticeably brighter (purely guessing, from around 170 odd lumens to 260 odd).

    • However, even on a fully charged Eneloop Glitter AA, the run time is low, less than 30 mins.

This is just a small pocket torch. It's not intended to be left on all night. The whole idea of it is to be small, and hence small batteries.

I cannot work out what anybody would do with a small torch like this for 30 minutes… mine get used to walk the 30 seconds or so to the back door of the garage and back.

  • Note that the battery is NOT included and is an extra $US7.60 (+Shipping) so actual cost is more like
    $12 (+shipping for the battery)

    • +3

There is no need to buy their battery. I just used a regular (Dick Smith) Alkaline AA (cost = $0.20) and it works great.

      • +1

You get a higher lumens output and longer battery life with the 14500. I've got a few of these torches and they're quite good, don't get as hot as my $5 1000lm one.

      • Fair enough..
I'm surprised that a Cree lights up at only 1.5V though (unless it has a voltage boosting circuit).
Battery life must be quite short I imagine, especially if it is upconverting the Voltage!

        • Yeah, it must be a voltage doubler which of course means it uses more current therefore draining the battery faster. I run mine with bog standard AA batteries (cheapest Alkalines I can find) and they work really well BUT I also don't ever really need to use mine for longer than a minute or two at a time either so this combo works well for me.

      • 20 cents for DSE batteries? Where did you get that from?

Cheapest so far i've seen is Aldi which is about 25 cents each, then bunnings 30 pack which is just under 30cents.

  • +1

Thanks to the awesome performance of the last lot I just got 20 more! Brilliant Christmas presents for those people who really don't deserve anything but you feel obliged to get something for (neighbours, workmates etc.)

    • From the same supplier?

      • +1

Nah. My last bulk buy was the "CREE Q3 3W 210 Lumen" from T-Mart back in April for around the same price. Can't see how different these would be but going by the spec these should be even betterer!

        • that is if these actaully work at all. Read the reviews from Amazon and see how many people got defective ones, which got thrown out in the end as return postage is covered by you.

        • Meh… they're Christmas presents so I'm not too worried :P

        • The good ones i have were also from T-Mart…

        • Yeah the T-Mart ones were good, at least mine is. These 'look' identical I think, so hopefully perform in a similar fashion.

  • +1

These are tip top, I've got many of them
One at my study desk to look in the PC
    One next to the bed.
One in the bathroom to look for tonsilliliths in the morning :(
One in the loungeroom to look under the TV cabinet now and then

    • +9

One to find all the other ones dotted around the house :P

      • +5

I just tape one to another one so I can always find it.

      • +5

And one to rule them all … and in the darkness, bind them

  • +1

I carry one of these around with me all the time.

The basic models have only one brightness setting, and no zoom.
This has the zoom & multiple functions, which is basically the best you can get for one of these things.

I'll be getting a few more at this price.

EDIT: not sure if i should worry about this.

    • +1

Note that according to the first review it's not clear if you will receive one with three functions (low, high, strobe) or only a single function (high).

The write-up on the Amazon page does not explicitly mention that you get 3 functions, so my comment above on this point may be incorrect…

      • Correct me if I'm wrong (I usually am), but the $3.80 one is the single function flashlight, you have to manually select the "3 mode flashlight" version which is ~$7.

        • On this rare occasion, you are correct.

They have updated their order page since this deal went up (i checked my screen scrape from yesterday) - when i made the comment above it did not show the multiple options.

  • So these won't have a long battery life?

There isn't much point in it for bike riding it seems then…

    • I use one of these for the bike.

It has a reliable rotary zoom adjustment, and it's brighter than this little guy.
I carry spare 18650 batteries with me.

EDIT: BTW i wouldn't bother with the rear warning light that comes with this - I use this instead. My butt is worth at least $20.

  • Thanks bro… got 5

  • +1

Amazon are asking what currency my Visa card was issued in.
    They haven't done this before.

Am I about to get shafted?

EDIT: If i buy in AUD Amazon seem to be charging me about 3.4% conversion fee (from USD).

    • get a 28 degree CC or citibank plus debit to avoid foreign transaction fee.

      • I use a pre-paid credit card to avoid being identified.

    • +1

I just used my 28 degrees CC to pay in USD.

Amazon conversion rate is 1 USD = 1.0713388369 AUD but the actual rate now should be about 1 USD = 1.036 AUD. I should have spend less than A$3.7 for the transaction. I know, it doesn't mean much, but as an ozbargainer, it's the way to go!

      • it doesnt matter. it will only be charged when the item has been dispatched.

    • +1

I just bought some shoes from Amazon and they asked the same question.
You should still be able to change the currency before finalising check-out.
I will always pay in the local currency because the 28 degrees rate is always better than the site conversion.
BTW - I really like your avatar FN. Damn that Christina Hendricks is crazy hot.

  • 8 eneloop batteries - check
    8 cree LEDs - check

now to load my ammo and store it around the house

PS $0.18 cheaper than last time
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/119124

    • that was US$3.98
      this is US$3.55
      difference is US$0.43
      :)

  • +1

Considering it's sold by the same merchant, what's the difference?
There is a huge difference between ORP/RRP

    US$3.55 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006E0QAFY/ref=ox_sc_act_im…
    US$3.50 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00828MZ3W/ref=ox_sc_act_im…
