Going on a volunteer exchange from Jan to Feb. Was considering Hungary and Poland but I could only see flights for $2000-2500. Anyone know of cheaper flights? I don't mind flying to a different country then connecting to a budget airline. Cheers!
Flights to Hungary or Poland

Can find melbourne to budapest for around $1575 but you'll need to specify your dates and the price changes depending on departure.
Oh wow. That's a lot cheaper! Thank you so much.
With Budget airlines: easyJet and Ryanair fly between Poland and the rest of Europe extensively. There's also Budapest's own Wizz Air. These flights can be had for as cheaply as $30 one way, plus baggage, so as adz suggested flying to London/Paris will be much cheaper than purchasing return from Oz to Poland/Hungary. I once flew from Rome to Krakow for $10! with Ryanair.
Another cheaper option is to reverse that and fly budget to Singapore/Bangkok. Depending where you're flying from, you can sometimes get return flights to Singapore with Jetstar/Scoot for less than $400 (or $500 with Qantas on expedia.com.br), then fly with Lufthansa/Austrian/Finnair/KLM/airfrance for an additional $1000.
Quick search on Kayak.com for the Sin-Eur legs:
Mel-Singapore RETURN (with Jetstar)
Singapore-viaHelsinki-Budapest RETURN (with Finnair)
Total: $400 + $1021 = AUD$1421And sometimes you can get a Singapore-Europe-Bangkok return for the same price.
Thank you! So insightful. Do you know if flights to/from these countries are common? I'm not sure if it's better to book now or wait for them to go on sale as they try to fill up seats. I would be flying just after New Years so hopefully I can still get reasonably cheap tickets.
Budget Airlines tend to further discount their seats in the month leading up to flights, but the opposite is true for most national carriers. The above Singapore-viaHelsinki-Budapest return is currently about $1600 for November-December dates, although other airlines (like Turkish) have the route for about $1300.
Hi Taniiah,
I'm looking at this too— well not the volunteering bit, but going to Hungary to see some family I've never met before… it strikes me as the best bet (if you don't mind spending some time on trains) would be to fly to London/Paris (from $1100-1200 return) then jump on the Eurorail (note- i haven't checked the cost of train tickets).
Alternatively, Melbourne— Budapest: $1683 aat STA Travel:
