Want to get my girlfriend an MP3 but not sure what to get her. We had a look today in some of the shops but seems it is just a couple models of iPod and some Phillips players. Would be good if the player can also do FM radio. No need to support protected files like M4A or WMA or whatever, plain MP3 is fine. Thanks.
What's a good cheap MP3 player

Maybe they just want it for sport, or for those occasions where you just need a low-tech solution.
I'm after one myself, so I can use it for biking / jogging. Carrying a 4.7 inch phone on your biking bottoms ain't exactly comfortable.
She has a phone but it's only 8gb and no expandable memory. Better to use the storage for camera photos/videos/apps rather than filling it with music and as scrimshaw said yeah her phone is kinda big compared to the tiny mp3 players you can get.
People I know who object to paying extra for ipods seem to think the Sansa mp3 players are a top value alternative.
I had a Sansa Clip and it was perfect. I second this.
I've had Sansa forever. Mine is the M250 2GB (old now)- but most of their players score high marks for being robust. My Sansa has been dragged around the world (a few times) & is used, non-stop. I powerwalk w/weights & this player has been through 7 years of use & keeps on going! Best of all (to me)- AAA, & I am a huge fan of rechargeables from ebay.
Cheers!
The lowest of the low mp3 players you find on ebay are not worth it. For e.g you can get those china-branded iPod Nano / Shuffle style players which will work fine for the first 2 months but after that their batteries will start dying prematurely (typical of china-made lithium batteries).
The next best thing are these AAA powered USB stick form players but I find them really finicky to use. So for the meantime, I've been using a Alcatel 918D phone as a dedicated media player which is quite portable (3.2 inch).I've been doing a bit of searching and found some refurbished Sansa Clip players (shipped from UK), but I'm unsure as to what 'refurb' actually means for these items, or how long they were used for. If anyone has experience with these refurb Sansas, post a review.
I just bought the one you linked to
Will post back with review when it arrives
Sony Walkman E-series is small, light, long lasting battery, and great sounding mp3 player. I would recommend them.
Sanas Clip with a 32GB micro SD card, cant beat it! (Google Rockbox if you're keen)
Thanks for the reminder about Rockbox
Bought the Sansa above to play with it
I have now owned three SansaClip players. These are great players in almost every way but one - longevity. I have until now always recommended people look at the clip as an excellent cheap alternative to the ipod. It's not perfect but for the price it's great. I love my clip, but unfortunately I can know longer recommend them as all three of my players have failed in exactly the same way after about a year of use - just after the manufactures 1 year warranty period has ended. While the players are cheap enough to replace every year I don't think that this is an acceptable build quality and now I am going to try something else (probably something a lot more expensive but hopefully it will also last a lot longer).
So how have they failed? Every player has failed at the headphone jack. It will start to cut in and out in one or both ears and then will become progressively worse until it is unlistenable. My third player has now degraded to this point. It works in one ear only but the other ear will come on and off whenever the player is moved. It's a real shame because I'm otherwise pretty happy with the player.
I use it for gym so it is jostled a lot but not to an acceptable degree. If you don't run with it you may get more life out of it. But until Sansa fix this faulty manufacturing I will no longer purchase or recommend their product.
She doesn't already have an iPhone/Android phone?
