$549 Pentax K30 Bundle, Includes Nationwide Delivery ($957.90 Value) - groupon.com.au

Bundle includes:

  • Pentax K30
  • 18-55mm Pentax lens
  • Tamrac Aero Zoom 20 DSLR bag
  • Sandisk 8GB C10 SDHC card
  • Silypix Developer Studio 3.0 for Pentax Software Disc

Camera body is fully weather-sealed and cold-proof
High definition images and video with sound
High resolution 16 megapixel CMOS

The cheapest I saw was in Target for $499 a few weeks ago, but no SD card and DSLR bag.

The $499 deal gone within two days.

staticice.com.au shows that an SD card and a DSLR bag will cost you at least $50. so, looks like a good deal, but probably I do not need one more DSLR bag and one more SD card ;)

Another thing which may influence your decision is that Pentax K-5ii may drop to $750 mark around Christmas time. Although there is no guarantee that it is gonna happen.

  • Excellent deal but the $499 deal acctually come with a Vanguard Bin-37 Bag and a Sandisk ultra card mentioned in their description. That deal was there months before it appear on Ozbargain and Ozbargained in 2days after that according Target rep.
This is still a very good buy but I would recommend go with a DA 18-135mm len bundle or something else rather than a kit len.

    • Sorry, I have very vague memories of that deal as I was disappointed when it gone so quickly.

  • This is one of the best entry level DSLR if not considering the later (but more expensive) model D50.

Pentax is a great camera brand which didn't get the reputation it deserves nowadays.

    • I disagree with that statement.

For an entry level buyer I'd recommend the Canon 600D or Nikon D5100 cameras at this price range.

There's nothing wrong with the cameras Pentax make but there really is no reason to buy pentax as a beginner unless you have LOTS of old lenses to use with the camera.

I bought a Pentax k-r as my first DSLR and regret going pentax so much.

      -lens prices
      -lens availability
      -lens selection
-EXTREMELY loud shutter and AF sound from the camera

Are just some of the things that really put me off the brand.

      • Just look at the number of Canon and Nikon cameras sold comparing to Pentax, you are clearly one of the majority!

Not that I expect to convince you with the below, as a K5 user I am just saying something many people don't know. Feel free to do more research online.

-lens prices: Pentax is much more reasonable, even the star lenses, limited and recent HD lenses are so much cheaper than N and C

-lens availability: Pentax have more lens available than what most people would ever buy

-lens selection: all is available unless you are after 'High-End' lenses. But I guess you wouldn't buy high end lenses just yet as a K-R user.

        • EXTREMELY loud shutter and AF sound from the camera
This (AF sound) is because of the screw driver AF system that works with lost of old lenses. Pentax is the only manufacturer that considers their long term loyal users and seriously work on compatibility. Nikon and Canon changed their mount completely and force people to upgrade.
        • "Feel free to do more research online."

I can feel the passive aggressiveness from my computer chair.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you how much research I did before buying the k-r. And even then I was not aware of just how much of an impact some things were.

I'm sure you are happy as a K5 owner but that is far from an entry level camera.

"Pentax is much more reasonable, even the star lenses, limited and recent HD lenses are so much cheaper than N and C"

No. Just no. I'm talking about lenses a beginner would be looking at. Say for exmple the most common "upgrade" from using the kit lens - a 50mm 1.8. A Canon EF 50mm 1.8 can be had for around $100 in almost any camera shop. The Pentax equivalent which was only introduced this year? at least $200 from ebay.

Or maybe a general 35mm walk around lens? Nikon 35mm 1.8 is just a bit over $200. Pentax 35mm 2.4 is around the same price but the Nikon is around a full stop faster.

"Pentax have more lens available than what most people would ever buy."

I meant shop availability but I will address this at the same time as your other statement:

"all is available unless you are after 'High-End' lenses. But I guess you wouldn't buy high end lenses just yet as a K-R user."

The passive aggressiveness is almost overwhelming.

When I talk about lens selection and availability I mean the number of lenses the camera has for sale. This does not mean I intend to buy all the lenses made for the camera. This does not mean I want to buy all the high end lenses. This means that should you need a lens for a particular task (ie you often find yourself photographing or need to photograph at an obscure length at an obscure exposure) then you are more likely to find a lens that suits your needs if you are on a system that offers a wider selection of lenses.

"This (AF sound) is because of the screw driver AF system that works with lost of old lenses. Pentax is the only manufacturer that considers their long term loyal users and seriously work on compatibility. Nikon and Canon changed their mount completely and force people to upgrade."

I am fully aware what the sound is. But it doesn't change the fact that it's very loud. This compatibility argument is brought up again and again by Pentax "enthusiasts" but it does not help a beginner DSLR user one bit.

Let's raise another example. 50mm 1.4 is a very common buy for a lot of beginners who are getting serious. Pentax FA50mm 1.4 is $400 and uses the built in loud AF motor of the camera. The Canon EF50mm 1.4 USM has its own quiet motor and costs a bit less than the Pentax (price on ebay). I know for a fact that the Canon is MUCH quieter than the Pentax because I have the Pentax FA and a friend has the Canon EF.

Like I said in the beginning, for a newbie wanting to step in to DSLR world Pentax isn't a brand I'd recommend.

Bit limited choice of lens if you wanna buy from bnm shops here. It's not mainstream enough but yeah it's great camera

  • CR Kennedy sell a lot of Pentax lenses.
They have 10% discounts quite often as well.

  • I used Canon 600d and nikon 3100. This camera, the K30 is far superior to both of 600D and 3100. actually it is on par with the canon 60d and nikon 7100

I read somewhere that these break, so I bought 2 just in case I need spare parts. Good find OP!
