Flexicar Carsharing Melbourne - Free Student Signup, Standard Signup 50% off with $15 Credit

Hola,
The choice of a Melbourne car sharing service boiled down to flexicar and goget carshare. I've compiled a shoddy comparison below, however this deal is concerned with current promotions offered by flexicar until end of November. The annual damage cover fee has been waived for students, meaning no deposit and no fees. For standard rates this annual damage cover is half-price (now $35), with $15 credit towards your first booking. I've just signed up for flexicar and will likely do so for goget too, so far no first-hand experience with either. Flexicar offers their own competitor comparison here

GoGet

Pros:
Cheaper base rate
Fleets in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney
No hourly charge between midnight & 6am (nice way to try a premium car?)
Flashy website
Vans, utes, nice premium cars and electric (leaf and i-MiEV)

Cons:
$0.40/km surcharge
$49/$25 joining fee
$500 pre-authorization or $500 deposit for standard and students rates respectively

Flexicar

Pros:
No distance surcharge, 100km included (cheaper overall for even moderate distances)
No deposit, pre-authorization or joining fees
Widerish coverage, including La Trobe, Deakin and Monash universities
20% member discount with Hertz for hires >3 days
Prius V (7 seater), compact SUV's

Cons:
More expensive base rate
Annual damage cover fee
Car fleet more 'vanilla'

suggested tweaks or additions to the comparison are appreciated

  • I see the flexicars around campus sometimes, but can't really understand how people use them.

Like…I couldn't drive to my house (>30kms) and park it there over-night and then drive it back the next day could I?

If its just for short-trips around the inner-city areas…I'd just stick to PT

I suppose it would be nice if you need to buy some bulky items and drive them to your apartment or something…

  • You could do that, but you would pay the daily rate which is far from competitive. I only use public transport and a motorcycle; if you're the kind to stick to PT this is ideal. Suited to very infrequent need of a car, as you said this is good for collecting bulky items, as well as bulky friends from the airport. >30kms is probably a deal-breaker, if there's a car parked around the corner from home in the city its fantastic.
