Car Insurance renewal

I've just gotten my car insurance renewal from Bingle, I did a quick check online for what the cost would be if it was a new policy, and it was about $100 cheaper. I know it's common for insurers to jack up the price at renewal time, has anyone had luck contacting their insurer and getting them to give you the same price as a new policy? Alternatively, if it expires and I take out a new policy the next day, will I get the cheaper price?

Also if I could get recommendations on other insurance providers that are reasonably priced please let me know, I just got a quote from Coles insurance and it was about 3x the Bingle quote! Did check their price beat but when I called them they said it's on my renewal price and my renewal price is about $870 so it would only be $87 less whereas a new policy with bingle is about $770.

  • I've been with Bingle for 6 years now, with 2 cars. I, like you, always check if my renewal price is the same as a new policy - but all 10 times it has been. Right down to the cents.

Are you sure you didn't change one of the details somewhere from last year to this year?

Forget Binglee. Try getting a quote from Progressive (they have got good reviews on whirlpool forums) and you will be surprised.

On the other hand, I always find my renewal notices are more than a new policy, so I just call them up and ask them to reduce it or I will not renew. I tell them I am going with 'x' company and 95% of the time they just give me the discount needed. Takes less than 5 mins.

  • in the QLD NRMA offers 10% beat price on renewals.
maybe not what your looking for, but great for me as I went with progressive last time and so when i get my renewal (I'm hoping it will be the same price) then switch back to NRMA (who had previously beaten quotes by 10% but then last time when I had to renew they jacked the price up by $300+)

  • Every time my renewal comes up for renewal I obtain a few quotes for comparison. I have remained with Youi for several years now as I have still found them having the best price and cover for me. I also ring Youi to check if they can do better than their renewal notice says too, and that usually works a treat too. Perhaps I have an older car than you, garage my car, etc. but I last paid $429 in February for full comprehensive. Would be more if I chose to remove the excess though which is about $700 for my policy. With Youi they ask an awful lot of questions but you receive some reductions/consideration for car usage/garaging/locality etc.
