So my electricity and gas contract is up - I was with Origin on a 12 month contract, with a 13% usage discount. At the end of the contract, you revert to bog standard rates, so time to change.
Looking around, the best offer I could see was from One Big Switch, who offer a 15% discount on the total (usage + service).
I phoned Origin, told them the 15% offer, and they said the best they could do was 13% off electricity usage, and 11% off gas usage. Looking at past bills, gas service is typically around 22% of the bill, and electricity service is around 10% of the bill … so for me, Origin's offer equates to around 12.6% discount off electricity total, and 9.4% off gas total.
I'm in NSW, postcode 2009. I'd prefer to pay explicitly, rather than by direct debit, so have used the non-direct-debit discount figures above.
One Big Switch use Click Energy, and there is some rather poor feedback online about them on www.productreview.com.au , as well as similarly poor ratings for Origin and Lumo. Red Energy and Dodo are in the middle. Momentum seemed the best rated energy supplier I saw, although at only 3 stars presumably that means most electricity companies aren't great.
Anyone recently go through the process of finding the cheapest supplier, or come across any special offers? The best offers under http://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/electricity have expired, and the remainder aren't great. It would be a nice if they didn't have terrible feedback, but that might not be possible!
I am with AGL and was on a 7% discount until my contract was up recently. I rang them and said I was going to leave and they offered me 15% discount over a 3-year contract, which I accepted.
How much is your average electricity bill? If Origin are offering a 13% discount, you hafta ask yourself if it is worth switching for the sake of getting 14% or 15% with someone else… you will only be saving $2 or $3 a month… especially if you have concerns about the customer service of some of the lesser-known providers.
Sure it goes against the spirit of OzBargain! But sometimes it just isn't worth the hassle…
