Heading up to Nelsons bay for a few days this weekend to do some fishing and wondering if theres any decent things to do when i get annoyed that i'm not catching anything.
Going up without a car so somewhere around the bay region or somewhere accessible by whatever public transport they have up there. Already have in mind trying to find the best fish n chip place/chilling on the beach. Any good unknown spots or anything?

Yep the cruise is great. We done the 1 with the net off the back and u can sit in it while it goes along. Kids loved it so did i! Haha was great on a hot day!
You can climb the Tomaree Head at the south side of the entrance to Port Stephens. Great views. Other hilltops are Nelson Head with its old lighthouse and Gan Gan Lookout with its Gymea Lilies. I reckon they could be Triffids in disguise. From Gan Gan you can see almost back to Newcastle. Whatever floats your boat. At some low tides you can walk across the Fingal Spit in Fingal Bay to the island. This could be dangerous and you could get trapped out on the island. Get local advice on this one! Not sure if this is still on but there used to be a cruise across the water to the Myall River and up that a few KMs. Get a few dolphins following the boat. There are some offshore islands (Cabbage Tree and Broughton Islands). You may be able to get a boat trip to them. Shoal Bay beach is always good for relaxation. I used to like to hire a catamaran for an hour or two and just float around the bay. After much persuasion, I took the missus out on one and the bastard left the bung out (drain plug) and it started to sink. She was unimpressed. Some of these may no longer be available as it's a couple of years since I was last there. Avva good time.
I would seriously reconsider going up there this weekend, pretty big bushfire at Salt Ash and the area is under evacuation orders. With the wind we will have during the week I doubt they will have it under control any time soon.
How bad is it, saw in the news that fingal bay was burning but didn't see how it'd effect nelson bay (just staring around the marina).

Its pretty bad, i can see the smoke from my place, they had evacuations inplace yesterday and last night, although they did get rain there last night and its alot cooler today but with a stiff breeze around still.
Its marked as contained, but if we get the weather thats forecasted in the next few days that might change.

Well running out of options so just finsished booking, hopefully its alright. Anyone know any decent fishing charter ran there?

Looks like the fire has flared back up again badly, evacuation in place again.
Probably book a whale watching cruise. Not sure if they are still around or not.
