Would you return something and buy it again if it's being offered on sale tomorrow?

Ok - so I bought a "full priced" dress at Myer earlier this week. Was $110, not too crazy.

Myer's now sent an email saying that all full priced dresses for these brands will be 40% off tomorrow.

Would you return the dress and buy it again, the same day? Savings - $44!

    yep

  • +13

Ofcourse. You would be crazy not to do that.

  • +12

    Depends..
How long will it take and how much do you value your time?
For me… $44 isn't worth it unless I had another reason to go or was already going to Myer or near Myer (ie within 500m)

    • +13

I say depends too, although for me $44 would be worth it. That's nearly another dress on sale!

    • +3

      That's my dilemma.

    • +3

Why are people downvoting scubacoles? Is it because you don't believe that his time value of money is higher than yours?

    • +1

Don't get me wrong, I'd be pissed, but not so much as to waste time to recover the money unless it was worth the time investment.
I'm time poor, sadly not money rich, so, I probably wouldn't be bothering unless it was in the hundreds..
then again, I'd be unlikely to buy something full price in the first place..

      • I don't often buy anything full price. But like you, I was a bit time-poor, and this was the second time I'd gone to Myers to find a dress. At $110, it wasn't absurdly expensive, so rather than "revisit" later on, I just bit the bullet and bought it.

At the end of the day, I thought the outcome was a good one. Going back to do the refund / repurchase, netted me a second dress for an additional $51 (it was also 40% off). Was worth going back. :)

  • +3

as long as you haven't worn it

    • No, I haven't.

      • +6

i think if its not out of your way to get into a myer store do it…

        $44 is a nice meal for 2 people :)
        you can wear that dress…

  • If it works out to be cheaper why not?

    • +1

The hassle of going to the shops, with a 1-year old in tow.
And looking very odd at the cashier, returning a dress then buying it again.

      • +8

Yes, do it.. and don't feel guilty/odd about it.

The cashier staff will most likely understand why you did it, and I'm sure they would've done it themselves too. Its quite a significant price difference!

Plus, the staff wouldn't care less.. its not like you're violating their terms and conditions.. and its not like they're getting paid less for doing this for you..

        So yeah…… DO IT!

PS: I think I remembered my wife doing something similar.. and the staff were very understanding and did not make her feel awkward at all..

      • +1

Yes, Dont care about what staff would think or feel. Sometimes they may even recommend you to do this, when you would say you want to return. And who knows, there might be some other choice of dress among discounts that you may like more than current one.

      • +9

Do it. Then go up to the toy section and put a big smile on your one year old's face…$44 buys some awesome toys :)

As someone who has been on the other side of the counter…we don't care. You are person number 8,534 to have done something like this. You are actually one of the more sane, reasonable customers of our day. Just be nice and have everything ready (receipts, cards etc) to make it easy and quick.

      • The return counter is different from the check out counter isn't it? In any case you can pay at a different counter to avoid the awkwardness.

        • +1

Nope, same counter. Even same transaction. Simply return item and rescan and then refund accordingly. If you paid by card you'll need to bring the same card, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. And it's common so not awkward at all. (I work at Myer). :)

  • +6

I have never purchased anything from myer at full price. You must have been there on the one day they didn't have a sale.

    • +1

The sales were on… but they don't necessarily discount everything even when the sales are on.

  • -5

Myer only do store credit for change of mind now anyways.
So you would stil have to spend the $44 in store, so they get your money either way.

  • +2

    Not necessarily true….

    CHANGE OF MIND
If you have simply changed your mind and you are able to provide a valid receipt, Myer may offer you an exchange or refund provided that the merchandise:

    is in saleable condition
is unworn or unused with all original packaging and tags attached
is not subject to the exclusions listed below
and the exchange or refund is sought within 30 days of purchase.

At times throughout the year, Myer may extend the 30 day period to allow for gift giving periods such as Christmas.

If you are unable to provide a valid receipt and/or 30 days has passed since the original purchase date, Myer at its absolute discretion reserves the right not to offer an exchange or refund for change of mind. In such cases, Myer may, at its absolute discretion, provide you with an exchange to the current value of the merchandise.

Myer is not required to provide you with a copy of your original receipt to facilitate an exchange, refund, insurance or warranty claim.

    • My cousin works for Myer
and informed me that it is store policy, that if an item is returned due to change of mind a store credit is given.
The policy was officially changed on September 1st.

      • +2

Strange. I got my full refund. Paid using a gift card and credit card. Refund was given as gift card and credit card refund.

      • +1

I just bought something last week and returned it this week with no issues.

  • In theory, yes, I would return it and rebuy. Although you may not find them as forthcoming as you hope. It will be easier provided the same dress is still available on the racks. Otherwise getting them to resell you the same dress might be tricky.

  • +3

you asked the most obvious question on a "bargain" site. $44?? i could buy 5 days worth of lunch at work with that amount of money!!

    • +5

I was thinking that too, but now I have spent an additional week's worth of lunch on a second dress. ;)

      • +1

A second dress? But you just bought a new dress. How many dresses does a girl need?

Aye yi yi, I'm never getting married.

        • +1

Honestly, I don't have any work dresses. So the second dress was a work dress. The first one was to attend a friend's wedding.

    • .

    • +6

If I was offering it on sale…. I think I would… Happy customer = repeat customer. Like apple with their iPads, if you buy one, then they reduce the price on it within 2 weeks, usually because they are releasing a new model, I think they give you a refund on the difference. The dress is new, unworn, bought only 4 days ago.

    • It's irrelevant what they would do. Myers WILL do that so it is completely morally correct to take advantage of it.

  • +2

Doooo it!!! With the $44 you could contribute it to buying a new pair of shoes, to suit your dress =D And if you buy the pair of shoes at Myers, its a win win situation

    • +9

Thanks. I spent $51 more and got a second dress. Win win. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

      • +1

Haha…just read this (after commenting above). Glad you did it, hope they were good about it :)

  • +1

28 degrees, or similar, buyers protection

  • +1

Do it. Do it. Do it.

  • Of course! But I would not buy anything from Myer that was not on sale, because you just know that it will be soon. The staff might be able to give discounts if you ask them nicely.

  • do it

  • +2

Realistically, go up to the service counter and ask this exactly: Yesterday I bought a dress & now it's $44 cheaper! Could I please be refunded the difference?

You know how many time out of 10 that will work? TEN!

  • +13

Are you kidding me? We are OZBargainers, I would return it even if the price difference was 2 dollars!!!

  • +4

I work at Myer and people do this every time we have a super Saturday sale or something similar.
We are more than happy to do it and i've never heard of a staff member turning down a customer because of this.

Also technically speaking, as long as the return is within 30 days then there are very few circumstances where we can't return the item. I hope you got it for the cheaper price!

    • +6

I did. Still felt awkward though. I checked the rack still had the dress in my size. Returned my first dress. Walked around and found another one I liked, tried it on, decided I liked it, went back to the rack, got my first dress, and went to a different counter to pay. Hehehe.

  • Interesting Question,

Answer me this, Do people still do the same thing with Xmas presents purchased before Xmas day and then returned to get the discounts during Boxing day sales?

    Just curious.

    • Wouldn't you need a receipt? I wouldn't do that anyway. Kinda insulting to the person who bought you the gift.

  • Most people are returning unwanted gifts on boxing day (if they're brave enough to push past the bargain hunters). I have never come encountered someone on boxing day, or any other day, who returns a gift to then re-purchase it. I would still put the transaction through but I wouldn't personally return then re-purchase a gift.

  • Just do it!

  • It always happens, you buy something only to see it onsale within a week. I hate it! lol And you are like so happy when you buy something that you consider a bargain to only discover you have been diceived. Its like the devil is taunting you, it teaches me to look at ozbargain to find out how ripped off I was the previous week. xD

  • Done it at Kmart.
Bought a elcheapo bike and one week later it was 20% off. Went back with receipt and said that I would like to have the discount otherwise I will return it and buy a new one.

The store manager um-and-ah then said "only this time".

  • YES

  • So how are you going to do it? Go to the salesperson say I want to return this and then get your refund, but then say oh yeah by the way I actually want to get it again. So its like 40% off, your shitting me, no way. And then buy it again. I dont know I guess technically you could do it, just the salesperson might not be too happy. Or you could go in with your friend and get her to buy it, but they might take a while to put it back on the racks. I dont know do you really want to do all that for $44? I guess I am talking to an Ozbargain person, so I guess the answers yes. Just a lot to go through I guess

    • Just read redslert's comment above, I guess you can do it that way. Just go in on a day when you can handle the embarrassment I guess

      • Read my comment above. Just told my story, lol.

  • If you think this is bad I know someone who bought a suit for a function and returned it the day after the function :P

    • +3

I think there's a fair amount of bum people who actually do this. Buy a $1000 dress, keep the tags on, wear it for an event, then return it for a refund the next day. It's like free costume hire! I would be pissed if I was a small shop owner.

      • I was at a reasonably nice restaurant and there was a girl in her twenties and a "mature" lady seated near each other at different tables. I saw the mature lady get up, put her arm around the girl's shoulder and pull off a tag that was hanging a bit out the back, without asking her if she wanted it pulled. Based on the girl's reaction, I am reasonably certain that she was considering returning that item.

      • +3

Absolute disgrace, know one person who used to do this. Have these people no shame? Suppose they get different servers each time they return to the store.

  • of course. every time.

  • This is fine, but make an appointment to catch up with a friend nearby so that your life is not solely about saving $44.

    • +2

I'd love to be a friend of someone who is inviting me just coz they happento be rrefunding a a piece of clothing.

      • Maybe I'll give you a buzz next time, lol, unless that was sarcasm. Was that sarcasm? :p

  • Of course. My Ex girlfriends mother used to buy lots of clothes for work and they used to be designer brands. She'd get an idea of when the sale was and buy the item just before sale started then when the sale started she would refund then buy it again at sale price. This method saved her many thousands of $$$

    • Why wouldn't she just buy them on sale? Do you mean she wore the clothes first and then got refunds? It seems a lot of running around if she was buying the clothes and keeping them until a sale came on.

      • +2

It ensured that she got the size she wanted. She was a very busy woman so wouldn't always be able t be at the sale as soon as it started so when she went to buy it before the sale started she could aways find her size then she could return it when she had time while the sale was still on and buy it back. So essentially saved her time and money for the little effort.

Edit: she didnt wear the clothes after she bought them at non discounted price. We're talking about clothing items between $500 - $1000 without the discount.

        • That makes sense. Thanks.

  • I'd return it and buy it back and buy even more things, if I was willing to pay price x for something and now it's. 6x I'd end up buying 3x worth of items.

  • I know a girl who bought 2 tops from Target on the Saturday for $10 each and returned them on the Monday as they were $8 each on special, I just couldn't be bothered for $4

  • If it's still sealed it's ok. If you've used it, that's not a cool thing to do. You accepted the price it was offered at, at the time you made the purchase. Live with it.

It's happened to me plenty of times, mostly online purchases though, so no refund.

If it's things like groceries from coles, it doesn't even enter my mind. But if it's an expensive item and I haven't opened it, I can see a case being made.

  • You bet I would.

I bought some soft plastic fishing lures from BCF a couple of days ago. Then that night I received a "25% off all lures this Saturday" email. Tried to return them (unopened) and they refused! Also refused to refund the difference.

So from now on I'll actively search for cheaper prices online, instead of visiting the BCF store that is close to me. Why? Because first, they should have told me lures would be 25% off tomorrow. Second, they should refund the difference. Third, they should refund on unopened product.

So BCF better be happy with their policy. Because it's going to lose them who knows how much moola from my wallet.

    • Do they normally do returns? Buy some today on sale and return the others next week?

      • BCF returns policy:
In some cases a refund, replacement, or repair may not be offered if you:

        •Substantially modify the product;
•Misuse the product contrary to user instructions or packaging labels; or
        •Simply change your mind.

So, my earlier suggestion probably won't work.

        • Just sent them an email. I already know I can purchase most things they sell cheaper online. I told them so, and even though they're only a couple of km away, I'd now rather wait for the post than support a business that doesn't support me.

Anyone know… Is it even lawful to refuse to refund on an unopened product only a day or two after purchase!?

        • If it's just because of change of mind, then yes, it's legal for them to refuse a refund. They only need to refund on faulty items.

Many businesses offer returns on change of mind purchases for goodwill, but they aren't obligated to.

That sucks they won't refund considering it was in resaleable condition. Bad move on their part, they just pissed off a customer through a very narrowminded decision.

Did they respond to your email?

    • +1

Maybe next time try doing the full complaining part by rolling on the floor threatening not to leave till they gave you whatever you demand.

  • -1

Of course you should go for a refund even you have worn it. Buy the same size dress at reduced price, return this dress with full price receipt. So you kept your original purchase.

  • +1

    Yes,

I have bought a $3400 (negotiated down, apparently as cheap as they could 'possibly' go) samsung series 8 t.v from Harvey Norman, then returned it a week later when it went on sale for $3000 (obviously they lied).

    • They didn't lie an employee can't magically put things on sale they can give you a discount tho

  • Of course!! As a teenager growing up in the states with my shopaholic cousin we'd always go to the mall and she kept her receipts in her wallet to request a price difference if any recent purchases was reduced.

  • Until recently I worked at Myer. We were taught that if there was another dress (or whatever) on the rack then you could have it at the sale price otherwise we had to hang onto the returned item until the next day.

    • They could have done that… I wasn't taking note… Was feeling awkward enough.

  • +1

Haha. I did this, except it was a $50 dress and only 30% off (saved $15). :P Worth it!!

  • +1

A few years ago I bought two sets of chargers and apple accessories from the apple online store. About a week or so later the price dropped by at least 25%. That was when the Aussie dollar went above parity for quite some time. I rang up customer support and asked to return them and said I was going to buy them again because it was over $100 less in total. They're happy to arrange the courier to come pick up (I imagine that'd cost more for them) for free and transferred me to another person to take my details. When I spoke to the second rep she said they've got a price guarantee thing so if they adjust their prices they'll just refund the difference.

So I got my money back without sending the whole lot back, which makes me think that's probably the reason why apple rarely (or never) make price adjustments to their products. I do give them credit for having this scheme where you can get the difference without refunding and rebuying everything.

  • +4

What I do when I purchase something one week and it goes on sale the next, is to purchase the item again at the lower price. This is because I've already used the item hence not refundable. Then return the new it using my old receipt

    • -2

Yeah I think that is called FRAUD.

  • What if u bought something for $1000 and next day it was 50% off, and that store was 2-3hours away by car?

    • $500 for 2-3 hours 'work' seems a fair deal to me.

  • LOL. It's now 50% off, but I don't think I will bother this time because I've already worn one of the dresses this week.
