Tobacco limits for incoming passengers to Australia

Hi all,

My brother is coming here next month with his family for a 4 week holiday and since I don't smoke, I am not at all aware of the regulations on bringing tobacco into Australia. I did some research on the net and the customs website and figured out that 1 person can bring 50 cigarettes legally. That means the max he can bring is 100 (as there will be 2 adults in the family). Is that still right? Or can he bring more?

Also, can he claim TRS when going back? He is a non-Australian resident and is only here for the month of November. If he can claim TRS, can they put the money back into my account? Or my credit card? I am going to give my card to him while he is here so he will do his shopping using that.

The TRS is open to all overseas visitors and Australian residents.
Yes, will be able to drop into any Aus bank acct or credit card you nominate at the TRS counter.

  • I hope they do away with TRS on tobacco products.

    • There is no TRS on tobacco products.
I think you are referring to Duty Free, where they recently reduced the (incoming) concession from 250 to 50 cigarettes. Agree zero would be better, but a reduction by 80% is a great start.

      • I don't smoke but I can see how giving an allowance of 50 cigarettes would save time not having to process tax on every smoker that entered the country simply carrying their packet of cigarettes or forcing them to throw them out.

  • It used to be 250.. great times.. can easily sell Sampoerna cigarettes for $60-70 profit per 250.

    • Funny. Last holiday, myself and 3 friends split a carton of Sampoernas between us in KL and when we got to Sydney, they didn't even bother checking our bags.

      • i know.. haha..
