Acer laptop cashback already claimed by store!

i bought a brand new acer laptop from a sydney cbd physical store, hoping to claim the cashback, but it turns out the store had already claimed it!

the ad did not mention the cashback was NOT available. It had a link on how to claim the acer cashback, however it didn't mention very explicitly there was a cashback either. I would imagine the link with instructions imply that the cashback is available?

you guys think this is fair?

Which cashback is this? Employees of Acer and its resellers and distributors are not eligible.

How did you find out the store claimed it?

You also have to cut out the barcode (and photocopies are not acceptable).

If you received your laptop box and the box is in pristine condition, then there's nobody who has claimed the cashback. If Acer says the cashback is already claimed…. well, off you go to the ACCC.

    • The Acer site wouldnt accept the barcode so I sent them a support ticket. They said it has already been claimed.

I just looked - the barcode on the box has been cut off

Effectively then, you paid the price for a "new" laptop but didn't get one, as the manufacturer's required proof of purchase is missing. It's up to the store to replace the laptop with a brand-new one with intact packaging or pay you the cashback themselves, otherwise it's ACCC time.

      • Maybe someone bought it, claimed the cashback, and returned it.

      • Wow is there a hole in the box or did they manage to get the barcode off without leaving a hole?

Could you post a picture? They are pretty crafty if they managed to get that code off without cutting a hole. Just curious…

Lesson here - always inspect the box prior to purchase… You don't want to buy something that has been resealed or tampered with.

        • no hole but the top layer of the thick cardboard box as been peeled off. ok will post pics later

        • You can remove the barcode without cutting an actual hole by lightly slicing the top surface of the cardboard box with a blade and peeling it off. You'll see the corrugated surface below it though.

        • Thanks that would be good. Sounds like they thought this (dodgy) thing through.

  • that's dodgy..

Might not be the shop that is dodgy.
As prev mentioned, it's possible it is a customer return. And the box colour might disguise the sliced-off barcode.

      • Still if its a customer return, it ain't new! This seems pretty unfair all around, either the shop did and sold it…… or a customer did it, and later returns it to be sold as new. :( If your willing to part with the laptop i'd return the sucker for a new one or buy somewhere else.

P.S People have had problems with Acer cashbacks before so maybe (not feeling likely in this case with the aformentioned cut/removed barcode)it's their system!?

      • It takes two to tango.

Whenever you return something, the shop always have to make sure that the item is in a resalable condition. This means they are planning to resell the returned unit as new.

        • agreed….just dodgy in general and unfair to the end-user :(
