I found Varta Ready2Use AA 2100 mh Ni-Mh LSD (Low Self Discharge) batteries for $11 a pack of 4. On special at Coles in Brisbane city (Queen St), not sure if other Coles does this too.
Normal price is $20 a pack. The AAA 4-packs is $13.
These things are basically equivalent to the Sanyo Eneloops. I discharged the first pack at 1,500 mah out of the packaging. Considering it must've been in the pack for a while and they don't fully charge them in the first place, they last pretty good.
These weren't on sale at Coles World Square (Sydney), sadly.

The Myer Center branch have AAA and AA ones now, at $13.19 per pack of 4. There were maybe 10 packs of each.
