Cheapest 64GB SATA 3 SSD?

I wanted to buy a cheap SSD for my computer just to use as a boot drive and I need your help guys to find out what's the cheapest out there.

  • Save up 20-30$ more and you can get a 120GB SSD.

    • Why if you have no need for the extra space?

      • Because:

        1) 64GB is very small, I'm quite frugal with storage, I keep things very neat, clean and tidy, all my data on a home server and my boot + software SSD is around 45/120GB full. A 64GB drive will probably present itself as something like 59GB, meaning that you won't have enough space in the long run.

        2) Price per GB, 64GB is just so, so, so much more expensive. It would be crazy to spend $75 on a 64GB SSD when you can get double the storage for like $20 more or so. It'd be the same thing as buying a 500GB 3.5" HDD in this day and age.

        3) With computer parts, you should always aim for a little above what you need. It's much better to start off with something that's a little better than what you need as opposed to something that is okay now, but won't be enough later on.

        • None of these points go against the 'no need' part. For servers and media players in particular I would never even get close to using 64GB.

        • I have a 64gb ssd. It's fine. I disabled hibernation (google how to) and it frees up however much ram you have worth of ssd space (it deletes the hibernation file!) So I saved an extra 8gb.

At the moment, with all my programs, windows 8, a game or 2 and a bunch of other random crap on it, I have used only about 45gb. The remaining 15gb is plenty for me.

I think when I first installed it, it only used about 25gb tops. For boot drive only and putting documents/files on a HDD instead of SSD, you'll be fine.

  • 64gb is pretty small…

    From http://www.anandtech.com/show/6489/playing-with-op
    - "drive's performance consistency improves tremendously once you hit 25% spare area" i.e. you'll want to leave at least 16-20gb free at all times otherwise you get a huge performance hit.

Personally I've got win7x64 and only a few essential programs on my main boot drive and it's already at 40gb, so if you planned on installing much else on there you'd quickly run out of space.

    From http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/534?vs=533
    - There's no single quote, but if you look at the graphs you can see the performance differences between 64gb and 128gb models of the same SSD (Samsung 830), sometimes up to 50% difference (although how much this translate into real world performance I can't tell you)

Edit: was meant to reply to Bruce but yeah.

    • If you don't have a need to hibernate your computer, a small tip I learned is to disable hibernation! I have 8gb of ram so I managed to free up 8gb of ssd space!

@OP I'd still probably get 120gb+ just for that extra leg room.

  • Thanks everyone for your comments, I'll pick up a 128gb SSD from my local MSY they have them at around $100.
