Hi guys,

planning a first time trip from Syd to Melb with family in early November…i am keen to drive all the way to Melb….with overnight stop @ Canberrra…

but one of my friend suggested that there is not much to see/do in this route….and i should consider other options….

Cruise or Train something, if I'm interested in any of the sightseeing….

can u guys pls confirm/suggest any/some activities, good stopovers along this route….any suggestions/tips from your exp would be helpful….

If you do the coastal route, there's lots more to see. Stop at Bateman's Bay & Lakes Entrance.

There's sightseeing along the Hume Hwy, though not much - a submarine at Holbrook, a dog at Gundagai, the big sheep at Goulburn.

We tend to stop over at Albury, which is more midway between Syd / Melb.

If you stop over at Albury, and yor hungry pop into the Seamans Sailors Soldiers Club, they do a mean steak there!!

      • Seamans Sailors Soldiers Club =SS&A

or the Commercial club (on the main strip).

avoid wodonga. there is nothing there. (I challenge anyone to convince me otherwise)

Much more to see down the coast.
If you have time get off the highway and visit some of the coastal towns.
I recommend some of the places in Southern NSW like Bermagui, Tathra, Merimbula and Eden.
Eden is particularly fascinating because it used to be a whaling station, take a side trip to Boyd Town south of Eden.
The towns between Eden and Melbourne are worth seeing too, Lake Entrance, and even Wilsons Promotory.
There's too much to mention, get a hold of some tourist maps or look up the tourist info centres on the web.
Do the coastal route one way and the inland route the other.

  • thanks guys….was looking at the http://www.sydneymelbournetouring.com.au/ frm feedback so far seems like coastal drive is the way to go…..

do you recommend stop over @ Canberra if not can you suggest some other location for overnight stay…leaving SYD abt 10am and plans to stay somewhere between overnight and head off to MEL next morning with few stopovers…

is there anything to do in Canberra apart from Parliament house, war memorial???

We have just come back from Canberra yesterday. Great place. This year there is a free loop bus (route 100) which goes around the main areas of interest - war memorial (free), old parliament house, new parliament house, library, questacon (great for kids), national museum (free). Depending on age of family, there is something for everyone in Canberra. We stayed at the Hotel Kurrajong which was nice and quiet and had a good restaurant. Drive up to Mount Ainslie (sort of behind the war memorial, there is a steep walk down and back if you are into walking), the views were great. There are great parks around Lake Burley Griffin and a walking track all the way around - you can break this up into 3 bits if you like.
We travelled down to Nowra and then across to Canberra (stopping at Kiama) which was a nice drive. In the past we have also travelled down the coast road and then back through Canberra. We stopped at Eden (Halfway Hotel) on the way down.
