Beauty Treatment location turned out to be in a residential apartment

I bought a voucher from ourdeal for a beauty treatment. The ad claims the value is over $400 in value for each treatment and I bought a double voucher.

I booked via email and was told that ourdeal had the address wrong and was given the new address. I go there and it is in a new high rise residential building. I go to the apartment and the bed is in the dining room of the apartment. The apartment is furnished casually and is obviously lived in. It is not a display apartment. It is like going to someone's house. Someone you do not know.

The business is run by two women apparently. They each specialise in a different treatment. The one who specialises in what I wanted was not there. The one who did my treatment started and after a few minutes I said the machine is not turned on. So she turns it on.

There was no cleansing of my skin beforehand and she merely wiped off the conducting gel afterwards.

There was a dog running around the apartment and I don't like dogs touching my body or my belongings as I have a fair idea of where their snout has been. I wouldn't put my hand where they put their snout, so when their snout touched me or my gear it is the same as me touching it. I don't like it. It is not hygienic.

Towards the end, another client came and sat in the living room where, if they chose, could observe me getting my treatment and getting cleaned up, getting up etc. Because I was lying down and had gel in my eyes, I have no idea what they were looking at. It didn't feel nice.

Not thrilled about the setup and I think it should have been disclosed. I would not have bought the voucher if I had known this would be how the appointment was conducted.

I am not even sure that the treatment was really done. The machine was not on initially when the lady started and she didn't even realise it. Once the machine was on, how do I know it was even done correctly?

I have a second treatment booked and am thinking of contacting ourdeal and asking for a refund.

The voucher was for two visits. I have had one. I think I deserve a full refund.

did you take it up with ourdeal?

    • I'm trying to get a feel for whether I am being unreasonable. The whole thing made me uncomfortable so I am seeking input into the reasonableness of my complaint.

My expectation is that if you have a beauty treatment that they claim costs over $400, that it will be conducted in a certain way and in a certain environment.

I think you're being reasonable, but I'm not sure how ourdeal will see it.

Sounds pretty dodgy to me, and I definitely wouldn't be happy.

I sounds very dodgy to me. I wouldn't be happy.
Ask for your money back or at least a partial refund. If they don't oblige, call the local council and the strata company for the apartment block and see if running their business from a residential apartment is permitted.

        • I would agree to call the local council and the strata company and should get full refund from Our Deal as this is not what been advertised.

        • Thanks for your support. I doubt it will come to that. If I don't hear from our deal by the end of the day, I will email them and tell them I am going to the adma.

I am pretty sure WA requires IPL operators to undergo some fairly expensive formal training. While I didn't have that treatment, that was the other option on this voucher.

i have always been under the impression that you can not run a business in a building zoned residential.

That's just weird. Conducted in the dining room. With a dog present. Definitely try for a refund, that's sort of service is not what you sign up for.

Maybe if your friend was doing beauty training and you were a volunteer guinea pig, but not for a paid service.

I would write a shorter summary and request a refund from Ourdeal.
    You should say:
    - the deal was misleading because it offered professional service and medical grade treatment in a salon but;
    - the service was run from an apparently unlicensed residential apartment at a different address
    - the operator was unfamiliar with the machine to the point of not noticing it was turned off
    - there were animals allowed in the room
    - there was inadequate privacy with others able to view your treatment

    and;
    - you feel this was very unprofessional
    - you would please like a complete refund
    - you will lodge a complaint with WA Department of Commerce regarding Sky Salon and OurDeal's promotion if you feel this complaint is not resolved appropriately.

In my dealings over a dispute with Scoopon, it wasn't until I actually did lodge a dispute and give them a dispute number that they refunded my money. Up till then it was "we're sorry, would you like to schedule another time" but they immediately refunded after I opened a complaint.
Good luck, and update the thread with the result.

    • Thanks. I will write to them. I was mostly looking to see if I was being unreasonable. Some people may not mind the dog, but I thought it just uunderscored the lack of regard for me as a client.

  • There is another place called Dubai beauty in Applecross. They run out of a home and have toddlers running freely around the house. I went for threading. The only time I went, no one answered until some shirtless young man seemed to have gotten out of bed and came and told me to sit in the living room. The lady finally returned with another lady and at least one toddler. I was instructed to leave my handbag in the living room and go to the dining room for treatment. I did not return for the second treatment.

I think that when a home based business is offered on a group buy site, they should tell you that is the setup. It is not for everyone.

  • Ourdeal forwarded my complaint and refund request to the business. The business replied directly to me and said that she believes in Karma and has told Ourdeal to give me an immediate refund. I have not yet heard from ourdeal.

My interpretation of the email they sent to me was that the previous premises had been broken into and that there was still damage to be repaired and they were treating clients at the apartment until that was finalised. The reply stated that they were cancelling all appointments until the previous premises was repaired.

I have not yet heard from ourdeal and will update once they contact me.

Thank you for your responses and input, particularly Mskeggs.

They should have said that in the initial reply.

"Our premises has been recently broken into and requires repairs. As such we are operating out of our home until the repairs are complete. If this is not suitable for you, you can postpone your booking until the repairs are done in X weeks. We will, of course, extend your voucher to cover this delay".

      • I could not agree with you more. To assume that clients should be thrilled with this arrangement ( especially with no explanation) boggles the mind. She emailed me last week saying that she told our deal to refund me, but as of today (Wednesday), they have not followed up. I emailed them again last night.

Our deal has apparently already refunded my money. They sent one email saying they were investigating and then one that said they were refunding. The emails were stacked in my gmail, so I missed the second one saying that they refunded it. This was on the 3rd of October. They also said they put a $10 discount voucher in my account.

So ourdeal did the right thing. Thanks ourdeal.
