This article implies the Wii U sale from Dick Smith was a 'bait and switch' type of thing:

  • My local (Wynnum) had stock the day it was on sale and the Brisbane CBD store that I physically walked into had stock as well. They had the games (bar Mario) about half an hour after they had opened.

It's just a case of angry people being all pissed off cause' they didn't get their hands on some cheap CLEARANCE stock.

  • The Dick Smith stores in Cairns all had stock of premium and basic models and all 3 stores retained stock through the clearance weekend.

I went into my local on saturday, employee said they sold out of wiiu's in 2 hours, I dont think can blame dick smiths due to brodens buying a dozen.

I bought the last one at my local store…. that was at Thursday 2.30pm I was surprised that there were any left.

Even if I did miss out I wouldn't have had issue about it…. some people just have too much time on their hands.

  • I think it's just a case of tightasses thinking they are going to walk in and see a pallet of consoles sitting there just for them. They miss out for whatever reason, so go crying to the ACCC. I can't blame the employees one bit for buying stock themselves before the doors open, I would too, and so would all the butt hurt's out there if they were in the same situation.
It's a shame when I hear stuff like this, as it may scare other stores from having similar sales, in that whenever they do, they'll be dealing with angry customers and complaints through the watchdog, all because of the sooks with shallow pockets.

  • Coming from a major retailer, more stock would have been nice.

The ACL (and the TPA) requires reasonable quantities of the advertised good for a reasonable period.
The meaning of reasonable differs and depends on the nature of the market.
I would be surprised if any major retailer could get away with a sale where all items were pre-sold to staff (ie 0 items available to the average consumer) as complying with the reasonable quantities for a reasonable time requirement.

  • I was in Bowral on the weekend and the Dick Smith store there had stock of the Wii U console on Sunday 29th. I think we all get pissed off when stock is not available but it's pretty had to say its a conspiracy or bait and switch

    • Really? On the thursday it started Bowral was listed as out of stock when I checked. Odd.

  • Thanks for the comments, its an interesting read…. I don't really know much about these sales, as I shop mostly online, this article came up as soon as I searched for the sale in Google….

I know there wasn't much stock in Victoria or Online, and it seems that some didn't get emails regarding it, despite being Dick Smith customers… I just wonder if these types of accusations are real or fake….

I rang a store, and they had 1 in stock but wouldn't hold it for anyone, they said first come, first serve…. If the employees were trying to hold onto it, I wouldn't blame them, as retail can be a difficult field to work in.

  • Stock of both models all weekend at my local in Wangaratta, VIC

I managed to get a price matched basic console at Kmart. Didn't have any premiums in stock but it's still an awesome deal.

  • Is this deal still going on?

  • My store still has >10 premiums and a ton of basics. There's even two stores in this city. I am baffled how it's possible we have tons of stock yet no one else does..

    • What store is that?

      • Mackay, QLD. Canelands shopping Centre in particular.

Oh, and the sale price was still on last weekend when I checked.

  • No store around me (2529) had stock, all the way from me to Sydney itself lacked stocked. When I checked Campbelltown (100km North of me) they also said no stock despite site saying they had stock.
6076 also stated it had stock, when called, not a single store had stock (checked 3 stores there).
This was 10 in the morning.

Clearance stock shouldn't be advised in the same way as regular stock is, even with a "stock will vary" or what ever that note that was on it was.

  • I bought a basic Wii U from the Sydney CBD store on the Thursday morning (along with a couple of pro controllers and other accessories).

Whilst I'm sure stock was limited there certainly appeared to be plenty of people who secured one. It definitely didn't appear to be a debacle like the previous Dick Smith clearance anyway.
