Why would anyone buy this over a WD Live streaming?

Or say, one of these if they wanted Android.

    • Some people want more than video streaming and want to use Android.
Furthermore, the Android you used as an example is "Last year's model" - being a dual core, 1GB RAM model whereas the new models are very much quad core, 2GB RAM models which are way better.

    • I have both and find the WDTV much more user friendly with the proper remote whereas I use a mouse/remote/keyboard all in one for the Android based device and it's just a hassle.

      [edit]
I do purely use it for streaming locally stored video though.

      • Right. Me too.
I like the WD box because it just works. Any file format you through at it, it juts chomps through, no worries.

Well it just depends on what you plan to use it for… This has 100,000's of apps vs 33, quad core v single core, etc.

    does it work with XBMC?

    • Not really, scroll down on that page and you see:

"Dear buyer, pls note that the price in the link is based on 1GB RAM 8GB ROM version
and price for 2GB RAM 8GB ROM is 76.89usd/pc
any request in another version ,pls feel free to contact with me ,best regards !"

And that's still an 8GB flash vs 16GB flash in OPs deal. Work that ~US$77 (instead of US$68) out and it would easily boost it over the $100 mark when including shipping.

      OPs is a better buy.

  • I don't know much about them, wouldn't mind getting one, any thoughts from here?

  • Wish I could get more info on this, keen to buy one to compare to the WDTV Live but can't seem to find any reviews outside geekbuying.
It's essentially an android os on a decently specd media player?

  • The best version of one of these is the Neo X7
    http://aud.dx.com/product/minix-neo-x7-quad-core-android-4-2…

They also do a lot of good peripherals to it as well. Their airmouse (A2) will also do the accelerometer that a lot of games use (eg. Temple run, driving games etc) and only supports this particular model.

How do you know where to start and which one is best of type?
And which one is a decent and reliable brand? There are so many.Browsing around it looks as though quality looks like its up and down. Heaps of "never heard of it" brands from Chinese shopping sites and eBay. I am interested in the Android boxes too but where do you start? Its hard to pick!

  • Media player/server that can run torrent client with remote login.

    • side note… could Windows 8 RT be put on this? ARM processor right? or is it much more in-depth than face value would indicate?
