Sony Smartwatch 2 $149 + Postage from Kogan!

140

Just received an email from Kogan this morning advertising the availability of the new Sony Smart Watch 2.
A bargain at $149 + postage (~$23 for Melbourne). Would go great with those who have picked up a Sony Xperia Z Ultra phablet from the Harvey Norman trade-in deal.

I've collated a few reviews of the watch here:

This is by far the cheapest price I can find online and from a place that indicates it is actually available (although Kogan does say 3-7 days shipping)

  • As per the review, the previous iterations sucked badly. Having both it makes me love the pebble more.

  • +1

Can anyone who owns one of these watches chime in on what they use it for and whether they feel it's actually useful over getting your phone out of your pocket?

    • +5

I own this and pebble, its great to see who's calling and emails when you get little time and you are busy on other phones or in meetings. Aside from that there are applications such as running etc which are nice to use.

Unless you are a tech head who see's this as an advantage dont waste your money. These can be unreliable at times and can require weekly/daily charge.

Little apps are made for these devices and its a bit bleeding edge still, but fun to use and impress your friends.

Also most dont fit nicely on your wrist.

      • Hey Mikinoz do you have the new Smart Watch 2 or the old Smart Watch (or Liveview)?
It looks like this one is much better than the previous versions. The price is almost the same as the old versions too.

        • +2

Both, the liveview went in the bin after 1 week. The smart watch 1 actually not the newest just released version.

Actually come to think of it there is 3 sony smart watch. 1 is the first liveview. which was terrible. Then there was smart watch 1 which i have (not the 2) Now they are releasing the version 2 of smart watch if that makes sense.

Your right it does look much better, just concerned the frequency of charging. Price is right, which makes me think i would rather someone else buy it before me this time :) was burnt from the previous sony watches.

Dont get me wrong i like sony products.

        • Agreed. I had the LiveView, and the novelty factor wore off very quickly. I think the whole watch concept is good but no one has it right just yet.

      • Thanks for the run down.

When jogging/cycling I use my Mio Alpha (now supported by Runtastic, at last) so it'd be a bit weird to double up the watches for that purpose. Don't work a meetings job and only have one phone. So pretty much for seeing who's calling and smsing. Not too useful for me.

But good to know who they're for. Thanks again.

Ahh another person who assumes Apple did it first ;p

Not at all, Apple's nano was the first commercially successful smart watch even if it was never their intention. The whole smart watch seems doomed to fail though until they can fix issues like battery problems, light issues (you don't want a kindle style non back lit screen all the time and you don't want a lcd torch all the time) as well as a few others that may only come about from months of use.

If they can come up with a Smart Watch that's self winding, always on low brightness as well as induction charging for when it's not in use that could double as a wireless syncing platform with NFC then it may work out well…. regardless I'm ranting…

        • +8

Lol i like how you make that assumption for them. Perhaps they realised it would fail, if using bluetooth and having features outside of music, as that would consume the battery too.

Seems like they did everything to not make it a smart watch, kind of like how they deny the usefullness of NFC.

hey i enjoyed your rant (i didnt neg it), hope you see my post as friendly debate :)

More than happy to have a debate and couldn't care less about the negs, I don't know if it's just that I'm behind the times or not with this current path of tech but I see the whole smartwatch idea as a sideways step. Very little function for a fair bit of effort (in constant charging) and with very high cost but who knows one day everyone might have them and we might all have desks with in built induction charging mats so that their battery can last rather than having to plug it in to charge.

        • +3

          induction charging pockets ;)

I think your questions comments are quite valid actually. I think kinetic or charging by movement would be a great step forward. Charging (wireless) whilst wearing may not be good for the body, not that bluetooth or mobiles are.

        • Energy consumption of today's kinetic watch is zero compared to what these things suck up. Kinetic only seems to work on very low consumption devices.

        • +1

well, kinetic charging is awesome for these class of device owners because its what they do…. *clench fists and move fists back and forth in a sideways manner*

    • Sony had a bluetooth watch since 10 years ago, back when they were Sony Ericsson. You could see who was calling, and answer or reject a call. You could also go through your phone book and make a call.

This was before smart phones. And before the nano got turned into a square shape.

Smartwatch 2 is just an evolution of that.

Also, there was a smartwatch 1 which preceded this one too. So don't think that they just came up with the idea now because other people are doing it. Sony was ahead of Apple.

  • I wish someone would make an updated version of this: http://reviews.cnet.com/specialized-electronics/motorola-mot…

Still hands down the best smart watch.

    • Ditto. Can run custom mod on rooted motoactv. Still thinking of getting one.

      • They are discontinued and Motorola support is absolutely terrible, I haven't been able to sync my workouts to the computer for a month now.

GREAT device but the Motoactv portal is terrible.

  • so we can use this with any android phone, right? change music track.. and for running? does it means i dont have to carry my phone or i still have to?

they should just stick to making better gaming consoles and TVs.

    • I own a VAIO Z series laptop and it's by far the best PC laptop I've ever used. Sony quality hasn't been the greatest in the past years, but the Z series was a hark back to the times when Sony meant quality, like their stereos.

      • -1

Best pc laptop you've ever used, but that don't really account for much tbh. (As opposed to opinions by economists and facts showing how well sony is doing in the industry.)

Let the facts speak for themselves… we'll check back in a couple of years and see how sony is doing financially?

sometimes the worst things fans can do for their favourite team is to tell them they are doing well and keep doing what they are doing.

  • I'm so tempted. Has anyone actually tried using this daily? The reviews are interesting but don't seem to show actual apps or how they work..

    • yeah bummer - lucky I got my order in. Perhaps they realised they were much cheaper than the competition.

    • I got one for $149 so I hope they don't cancel our orders and say it was a pricing error.

      • Nah I don't think it was a pricing error. I got my confirmation email saying it would be sent in 3-7 days

        • Once you get it please let me/us know how it goes with daily use?

        • crappy kogan have delayed shipping until the 14th October. Seems like it was a con and they were selling a pre-order item :( not happy…
