Hi there, I am looking at buying a computer possibly a laptop. Does anyone know of any deals or a good price for one. I live in Perth. Also would a second- hand computer be the way to go ??
Thanks Agnes

  • If you're thinking of buying a 2nd hand laptop to save cash, read this FAQ before you do.

As for laptop or desktop deals, try reading Ozbargain front page or subscribing to the "Computing" category for daily updates.. CPL Online comes up with a new desktop deal every week.

Another thing I should ask is what the computer is to be used for (this determines how much you should really spend, and how high end the computer should be)

  • Don't buy a second-hand computer unless you are really desperate to save some money. Grab a decent i3 notebook with 4gb ram and 320gb+ hard drive, they can be had sub $500 these days.

  • Hi Agnes,

Use whitepages.com.au to contact Mandurah Muscateers Charity Computers.

They specialize in mainly desktop systems, but do get in the occasional laptops. They accept donations from businesses & then upgrade the systems. They come with Microsoft Windows 7 Pro + Microsoft Office (including Outlook). They are, at minimum, a dual-core system w/2GB RAM- which is plenty for most uses. They are capable of add-in card upgrades (such as low-profile video card, if you choose to do so later on).

The stipulation is (I believe, but you can telephone to verify) they're only available to Centrelink card holders/pensioners.

I bought two, complete desktops (including 20" monitor, keyboard, mouse) for $80 each- though I believe that they usually sell for $100. You just can't beat that! There are also usually some higher-end/spec systems there, as well- just ask.

    Cheers
