STEAM: The Secret World (MMPRPG,) %50 off - $15 US

40

I haven't seen this title discounted on Steam before, and it is well worth $15. Note that $15 lets you play it for life. You have 1 months membership when you activate the game, during which items from the shop are cheaper, but after the 1 month has expired you can still play the game.

It is a fairly hard occult RPG set in the modern world and some missions require thinking. I really like the game though, but it isn't for people who like to be spoon fed. Visit the item shop when playing a new character, since there are 2 free items that assist beginners (more XP from kills, a cat familiar). Huldra is the unofficial Oceania server. For beginners I recommend concentrating on a melee weapon, with shotgun as a backup (for the zombie swarms). Templar faction was the best starting location, and the only place you can purchase clothes from the stores. Save up you money though until you can purchase the first speed upgrade from your faction's trainer. I hope this advice helps someone.

  • "Pay once; play forever. Subscription no longer required."; from your original post seems like micro transactions?

    • used to have a subscription, but it was removed

    • You can pay for new clothing articles and boosts from their store, but it isn't necessary. Once you have completed the storyline, there are 2 DLCs with new missions that you have to pay for, but you can get 100 hours from the game without paying an extra cent. There are also apparel items you can purchase with currency earned in game, but they are different from the apparel items on the Funcom store.

  • Played the beta and didn't enjoy it at all but I hear it's better now.

    • improved heaps since the beta. I HATED the beta. Really enjoyed my time with TSW so far. Just need more spare time.

  • So… it this any good?

    • Really detailed storyline, interesting world, personally found the end game too difficult to get going in. I think worth giving it a go even for the non-MMO element

    • If you like Lovecraft/Cthulhu mythos, illuminati, occult societies and conspiracies, plunge in. There are magical skills as well as melee weapons and firearms, and a little bit of crafting in the game. The game is about 15Gb in size. The graphics are very nice, but I recommend you disable ingame antialiasing (which slightly blurs the details) and use SweetFX instead configured to use MXAA, bloom, vibrancy. SMAA is a replacement directX9 dll (like ENB) with configurable inis. Forcing traditional MSAA (multisample AA) doesn't seem to work in The Secret Welt.

      SweetFX with setup GUI: http://sweetfx.thelazy.net/
NB SweetFx works for all directX9 games, you just have to copy it's files into the root directoryof the game.

  • I dont think XP boost is a beginners benefit. If I were to buy this, which I might at this price, I would like to take my time and slowly level while exploring the content, I dont think I would want to rush it with an XP boost.

XP boosts are awesome for alts though.

    Definitely recommend getting this game.
After playing over a 1000 hours of it, I took a break, and recently got back into it, and there's tons of new DLC to go through.
Yes, there's some grinding involved, but there are very few MMO's where there isn't - at least you're not having to chop wood or farm sheep.

The other nice thing about it is that it is seamless - which means it doesn't matter what dimension other players are on, you can join in with them, so you can end up playing with Russians, French, Kiwis and other Aussies.
Being US based, there is a bit of lag, but nothing too bad. My home dimension is Daemon, and it doesn't give me much lag, even when the US players all hop on.

I started playing before it was F2P, and the community was a lot more mature than your typical WoW audience, and the nature of the game tends to weed out the players that do not want to think - I'm not kidding you here, there are some genuinely tough riddles in the game, but most of them are reasonably easy to figure out, if you are observant and give the puzzle a bit of thought.
If you like your missions tough, go for the Investigation missions, but blame me if your brain starts to hurt - knowing music composition, Hungarian, physics and Morse Code will certainly help you in a few of them..

The battle dynamic is slightly different from other MMO's insomuch the tank doesn't deal the most damage, but must generate the most aggro (or hate) to keep the attention of the boss, whilst the team deals out the most damage to kill it.

From recollection the largest Aussie Illuminati guild is BlackHearts (used to be led by Melissein, but might have changed).

There are some mods that will help out immensely - Fixed Gear Manager, Valyrie Friends Enhanced and Advanced Trade Post are strong recommendations, with Backpack2, Combat Stats and Buff Bars being worthy additions too. All these mods and more can be found at curse.com, though I would suggest you learn how to manually install the mods rather than using Curse's client - it can be a bit buggy at times.

Hope you have as much fun with it as I do :)

  • For what it is worth, Curse.com are running a hoodie and trial giveaway at the moment, which will give you 3 days access to the game, plus the Whispering Tides DLC.
Plus if you paste in the key into your Funcom account, you get an in game hoodie - not much, I know, but hey, free is free, right ?
That said, the 30 day subscription included in purchase will also give you full access, so really, it's all about the hoodie, unless you want to have a friend join you in game..

Hoodie and access will also work for existing players too.

  • Well I took the plunge and got the game thanks OP. Played a lot of MMO's in the past, mainly WoW and Rift. Took a while to get into it, for me it certainly wasn't something that hooked me immediately like some of the others did but eventually I got to like it a lot.

Worth checking out for a measely 15 bucks. The questing looks good, the abilities are good, talent trees (known as decks) seem to offer a lot of variety.

    See you in game.
