MINING STICKERS - Query on how to sell

We have a collection of over 3,600 ‘Mining Stickers’ which were collected over a number of years from the Tahmoor (NSW) area.

The albums appear to have been well maintained as the stickers are in a type of alphabetical order as well as an Album with ‘Pits’ on it and others marked Joy, BHP, Clutha. There are a total of eight very heavy photographic albums with the stickers neatly put behind the cellophane – most of them single but some are in uncut sheets. (all are mint/unused)

We do not collect these stickers/labels and have been storing them for several years. As we are maturing, we would like advice on the best way of selling this collection. We did not think that Auctions would be appropriate for this type of material as this is a specialized hobby and probably only of interest to those who collect mining stickers.

We have thought about ebay but due to the size and complexity of itemizing them thought that there must be a better suggestion.

Could we have some thoughts or recommendations on how we can sell this collection? We will not separate the albums.

  • Hi,

    Obviously a niche market.

I'm wondering if someone like http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/contact/ would be interested in purchasing your collection or if they could suggest other parties that might be interested…

  • You will get the most money if you sell the stickers/labels individually on ebay, but it will take a lot of effort in terms of producing each listing, answering dumb questions then posting to the winner. Maybe you could make a routine of it, listing say, 5 a day? It would take two years to get through them all, but then might not be so overwhelming!
If you want to get the collection appraised, I would suggest contacting one of the stamp or coin dealers in your capital city. They might be interested, or they might be able to refer you to somebody who is.
I would also suggest contacting the person behind this page on the old mining museum in Sydney, he might have some suggestions:

Another possibility is the mining hall of fame:

    or here:

Failing that, there are a number of public auction houses that might be interested. Lawsons in Sydney springs to mind, as they run regular art/antique/collectibles auctions.

A bit of googling suggests there are other collectors out there. Here is a chap selling his, maybe email and ask him if he has had any luck?

And frustratingly, a Lithgow newspaper story that is off-line:
    https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=cr&ei=EhxEUr3aOYKulAXSoIHI…

And one final tip, as there might be collectors in the USA and elsewhere interested, I would do some searching for 'mining decals' as well, as they don't always call them stickers.

And if you have a few spares, send them my way, I'd be interested in seeing some ;-)
    Good luck.
