Melbourne to Byron Bay, Long weekend March 2014

Have to go for a wedding in Byron Bay during Victoria labour day long weekend 8th, 9th, 10th March 2014. Want to leave Melbourne on 7th and return to Melbourne on 10th March. The tickets look to be slightly expensive/inconvenient times. Even flying to gold coast and then going to Byron by road doesn't seem to be too cheap.

Any ideas/suggestions/inputs are appreciated. Thanks.

Have a look at flying in/out of Brisbane, it's only an extra hour drive. Strangely all the fares are on sale for $79/ticket all day.

    • I did consider this option of Flying in/out of Brisbane, then I will have to rent a car to get to Byron bay for few days.

Or gold coast - it's only 1.5h or less drive to Byron bay. Besides if you fly to ballina Byron, you still have to drive to Byron bay.

If the Weddings in Byron, surely someone can pick u up from Ballina… its only 25min drive and buses that go between for $6 or so, even the Gold Coast (its in Coolangatta) airport is only 45min drive from Byron… Honestly… id just sit back and wait for the price to drop on the routes for the period - still almost 6 months away… I often fly melb<->ballina for $150 return, and melb<->gc I can pickup for about $120-140 return usually..

    • I was hoping for the fares to go down as well but do you think they will? It is the long weekend in Victoria and I thought since everybody will want to go away for the weekend, may be the prices wont go down. I might wait for few more weeks then to see if there will be any special fares for these routes. Thanks for the help.

If flying Jetstar, then try this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/99952

It still worked the other day. The flights I looked at were still marginally cheaper (~30aud one way, for a flight currently 169AUD) than on the Jetstar Australia website. The exchanger rate isn't as good as it was in April, but still not too bad.

I don't think prices will go down if you're flying out from Victoria and you've said it's a long weekend. You might get lucky and get a sale, but really it's 6 months in advance, so why not book tickets now and save yourself peace of mind than worrying about it non stop when they're most likely going to go up.

  • Hey we are visiting Byron Bay with our two boys and we are staying at FM on Lawson - http://www.byronbayaccom.net/accommodation/byron-bay/fm-on-l…

Has anyone stayed here before? My boys are a bit too fussy and its so difficult to plan a trip with them.
If anyone knows any better places, pls recommend.
