Can any SIM be converted to a micro SIM?

Hi all,

As a true ozbargainer I recently bought a nexus 4 phone after the price drop. After the phone arrived, I realised the phone needs a micro sim, and so as any professional would do, I decided to cut mine up as per the many instructions online. The new sim fits into my nexus perfectly, but i can't connect to the mobile network. I have tried the sim in my old phone, and it still works. I can't figure out the reason for this, and have raised a ticket with Live Connected (my service provider) to help. They have no idea either.

Can anyone help with what i need to do to set up my phone?
APN settings? Mobile network settings etc?

Thanks :)

  • Did you use a template when you cut your sim? I must admit if the sim still works and it fits then there is not a lot that can go wrong. Which would mean that its probably the phone.

    • Yeh, i used a template, and it recognises the sim as being inside the phone, but doesn't want to connect to YES OPTUS. I played around with the settings, but with no luck.

I may need to get a new sim. jimbobaus gave a pretty similar description of my situation, so it may just be an issue with my sim.

      Thanks.

  • Turn off flight mode…

I will be serious now. How long did you leave the sim in the nexus 4 for? When I did it on my TPG sim it took a few minutes to connect to the network.

    • I tried it for over 20 mins. I tried all the APN settings and mobile network settings.

I must admit i didn't try the flight mode settings. hopefully it was something that silly. haha :P

  • Is the phone locked to a carrier, whats the status ie sos

Try going into network and doing a manual search ie take it off automatic

Here is a post i found googling your problem, it may help

Nexus 4 is never locked to any carrier.

Ahh yes know it all Brucey strikes again lol. Did you read his post the sim does work in another phone.

    • Hey mate,

Thanks for your help, but the phone is definitely unlocked. All nexus 4 phones come like that.

      Cheers.

Yes it will work as long as you didn't damage the sim while cutting.

  • Yep - agree with Bruce, mine worked instantly (from iphone to Nexus 4) without any need to change to APN/ settings. But then my SIM was perforated so it was super easy to cut.

Check your SIM - maybe buy a SIM tray to fit your now-macro SIM and try on the old phone?

  • A lot of older sims (and optus full size sims) have a large gold area on the back of them… these older sims can not be cut.
It was only in the past couple of years that they switched to sims with the smaller gold area.. which meant they could be cut.

Worst case, contact your provider and get a micro sim.
A micro sim is better than a cut sim anyways.. 9 times out of 10 a cut sim will have issues in the long run anyways.
Cant tell you how many times a friend or the like has had net issues or something and its cause they cut their sim, swapping to a micro always solves the problems.,

    • Ahh, thanks for this info. It sounds very similar to my case. I have had my current Optus sim (still part of live connected) for over 1-2 years.

Here is a exact same type of sim card I have (the standard size): https://www.optus.com.au/dafiles/OCA/RightNowImages/sim_comp…

How did you find out this information? It's quite interesting to find out about this.

      Cheers.

I had to get my LC sim cut to fit in my N4, mine works fine. Didnt have to change any settings from memory.
Have you tried putting a diff micro sim into your N4?

    • Haven't tried that. I don't have any other sim cards that small lying around. Good suggestion though. I will see if i can lend one for testing from a friend.
