best way to clean engine bay

just would like to know other methods of cleaning the engine (block and chassis bay think what its called) i use engine degreaser with a rag to rub and wipe off.

i noticed at the self serve car wash joints have a option to make the pressure gun light to wash your engine bay. this safe? as read a few story's peoples coil packs and other electrical got stuffed.

any other ideas would be great feedback.

  • Yes, use degreaser, preferably in a pressure can to reach the harder to get places. Hose it off after a few minutes. then get a bucket of water with some good car wash detergent and using a pan brush , lightly go over the surface area of the engine bay getting a bit heaver where the grime or radiator water stains are worse. Again hose off with hose water. Next and probably the most important is to leave the hood up so the it can dry properly BEFORE you use the vehicle. A few hours in the sun here in the Tropics is usually sufficient, longer in the southern States. 45 years and never had a failure.

  • how messy is it? a little bit of oil/grease on the engine helps to prevent things from rusting.

  • got a lot of grease building around and on top of the rocket cover.

used a rag a screwdriver to get to the tight corners

  • Drive it to a manual car wash, put it up on ramps if you have any and blast it clean. Definitely let it dry or at least wipe down the plugs and leads before starting it.

  • Do NOT clean your engine bay. Also do NOT use degreaser.

The grease around your engine and other components eg hoses and belts stops water ingress and drying out. Just leave it. If you must clean it wipe it down by hand with oil or wd40.
