neither model has a dedicated graphics card as far as I can tell. and it doesnt look like its on the cashback list… can anyone else confirm?

    • Just wondering, Officeworks states it has Video graphics: Uma?

      • means integrated graphics - HD4000.

    • Do V5-571-53334G50M qualifies for Cash back?

    • Another option http://www.centrecom.com.au/acer-aspire-e1-571g-33114g75mnks… $399 after cashback + shipping.

      • How does this compare?

Pretty much the same price almost.

      • Must've been a pricing error or flash sale as the price is now $499 after cashback

        • +1

Keep watching if you want. I had ordered one on 18/09 for my brother at $399 after cash back then the price went up and down. Maybe intentional. However the OP deal might still a bit better. Just researched the HD 4400 (gt2) that intel 4200u has is equal to gt 630 performance? Can anyone confirm?

        • Maybe back up for the weekend shoppers instore. I wish they had 'click and collect' rather than paying $17 for shipping! Hopefully it will go back down - I can live without the USB3.

        • Sounds about right. HD4000 beats gt610

      • That one is really good specs wise BUT it only has USB2.

  • BEWARE ACER CASH BACK IS REALLY SLOW, I BOUGHT AN ACER IN MAY AND JUST GOT MY CASH CARD YESTERDAY SO DONT THINK YOU WILL BE GETTING YOU CASH BACK ANYTIME SOON

    • +1

Yes acer cashbacks are very very slow, but usually reliable.

      • I never had a cash back that is not reliable. Most cash back i receive in 30 days. 4 Months + plus you have to spend money on posting to get a cash back is just stupid.

        • I just get an express post envelope from work (so I can track as well)

    • But I never missed a beat with them, so it's not a big issue as eventually the money will show up.

  • Yay Ozbargain! I have been wanting a new laptop for ages and I just picked up the last one at North Sydney. It is a very nice looking laptop.

  • Waht is the hardware quality like with Acer these days?
My first massively expensive Windows 98 laptop was an Acer and it gave me no end of crap as the plastic, hinges etc disintegrated… and I am pretty careful.
I decided "never again" but these recent deals have me interested.

    • +1

in the last a few years (say 5 years), acer's build quality has improved significantly.

but how can an Acer laptop be "massively expensive"?

      • +2

All laptops were. Windows98 as in 1998!

    • I wondered this as well as I was one who got Lenovo'ed.

But I remembered my sister in law's Acer laptops from her school which gave her heaps of trouble as well as other students' Acers.

Found a recent thread on Whirlpool:

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2090561

Don't know what to do now :-(

  • What's the deal with the RAM?
    According to Intel: http://ark.intel.com/products/75459/Intel-Core-i5-4200U-Proc…

4GB DDR3-1066 Memory is not supported?

As the spec says it only supports:
    DDR3L-1333/1600; LPDDR3-1333/1600

Edit: The RAM is supported, but 2 year old outdated, low speed ddr3.

Edit: Actually it seems that the rated speed on the RAM in this laptop is much worse than intel recommended or what the processor can support. Need to chuck the ram out and replace with some good low latency DDR3 1600?

    • That's talking about the new low voltage ram. Should be backwards compatible but I may be wrong.

    • Was wondering about the ram speed also. I have an Acer v5-571-p with 3rd Gen i3 3217u that also supports ram @ 1333 & 1600 Mhz , but most spec list ram as 1066 Mhz , but when I opened up to order same matching Mhz ? brand ram, it stated 12800 which is 1600 Mhz clocked ram. Would acer install these units and have the mother board or bios clock it down to 1066 Mhz? Could I possibly change the ram Mhz in the bios settings without overheating computer? I have another laptop, Asus x501 running only an intel B970 but 4G 1600 Mhz ram, and I would say it makes a difference, it's faster and even with windows 7 as oposed to Acer with i3 3217u with W8 & 8 Gig ram. Could faster ram make such a difference?

  • Does anyone know what the battery life is like? How many cells? I'm on my phone and can't do a thorough Google search. Many thanks :-)

    • Not one 100% sure, but at a guess i would say 4 cell battery. Keep in mind its a haswell processor which gives better battery life. I'd guesstimate 5 hours.

    • As per one of the earlier review links posted

the runtime of the Acer Aspire V5-573 is 8:47 hours; a gaming session only lasts 2:05 hours due to the high consumption of the dedicated graphics card. The runtime during web browsing is more convincing; medium display brightness and activated WLAN result in 7:09 hours for the Aspire V5.

      • +1

This one hasn't got a dedicated graphics card i don't think.

        • Yes you are right, slightly different build, so the of 2:05 is unders for this one

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up. This pretty much looks like the specs http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/model-datasheet/NX.M…

Came with a little Acer cord to go from one of their ports to a VGA. So it can run dual screen 1xVGA and 1xHDMI. 1xUSB3 2xUSB2, Only one USB3 is a bummer. Looks like it has a touch screen, I haven't taken the wrapper off yet.

    • is it heavy heavy or just 2kg as Acer says..
What about the power supply ? Bulky or the slim ones?

      • +1

Power supply is very small… Overall the laptop is pretty slim and quite light

        • thanks…

    • +1

I didn't think it had a touch screen. Can you confirm? And those specs are for the model with the dedicated graphics card, noted by the G in 573G, which this deal hasn't got.

Got one from Phoenix in WA this morning, popped it open to have a look. The RAM is onboard but it also has one free slot so up to 12 gb possible I guess. Hard drive is easy to get to and has a mSATA slot as well. Thanks OP, going overseas next week so an extra 9.1% discount :) especially nice after being screwed by Lenovo

Here is a picture of it with the case off:
    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/110905/18395/laptop.jpg

    • Legend

    • good stuff, cheers

    • Does mSATA slot allow a SSD to be slotted in? If so how much on average does one cost, say a 128gb model and can you still keep the original hard drive in there for storage? Thanks in advance computer gurus.

      • You can only put a mSATA SSD drive into it - certainly not enough space for a regular SSD. Should be able to keep the standard hard drive and put in a small mSATA for boot/applications, although I decided just to swap my drive out for an 840 SSD instead. Probably looking around $150ish for 120 gig mSATA.

        • Thanks for that, much appreciated. How much did you pay for the 840 SSD? Samsung I assume? I take it you get a CD with the laptop so you can reinstall the operating system?

        • this laptop does not have CD/DVD drive. Any reinstallation will be via USB stick which you will be prompted to create when you first turn on.

        • +2

As said, there is no optical drive and the laptop doesn't come with a CD (or even really a manual…) I was going to use my Ozbargained Acronis True Image to dupe the original drive (and to save an image in case I need to get the laptop back to "original" condition for any warranty issues). I paid around $270 pickup for a 256gb Samsung 840 PRO, would have preferred to get the EVO but didn't have time to wait for an online order or travel too far afield as I need to get it set up in the next day or two so it's ready for my trip. Also got another 8 gig of RAM to get up over the $300 mark so I can claim the GST back on both on my way out. As mentioned below the cheapest upgrade would be a very small mSATA SSD - but I wanted to only have the one drive and didn't want to have to mess around too much to get it running.

        • Correct beatthesystem, but in answer to hebo, if you get the Samsung 840 ssd, it comes with a cloning software in the form of a cd. That is why these 840's are popular amongst other things. You will just have to get your hands on an external dvd drive though, or buy one of those Aldi hhd docs ( $ 29.99 ) with one touch cloning function. I have done this myself successfully using both techniques. Happy upgrading

        • You can download this backup program that does the HD to SSD cloning for you and it's free:
          http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/download.htm

          How to: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid+stat…

  • Add a 30gb mSATA SSD for under $60: http://www.megabuy.com.au/intel-ssdmceac030b301-525s-mlc30gb…

Configure SRT (hopefully the chipset does support it, all recent chipset should?) http://www.pcworld.com/article/248828/how_to_setup_intel_sma…

  • Just dumb question: if I swap the original harddrive for an SSD or whatever, does it mean I'll have to buy Windows myself as the OEM system is in the original harddrive?

    • Refer to posts 2-3 above for options. Also if you google that question, you should get loads of info.

      • Sorry but couldn't find any answer in this post; and my googling skill sucks so any help is appreciated.

        • The 840 I bought came with software to dupe the existing drive, but unless you get the pack that has the cable included you'd also need to get a USB->sata adaptor to do it. I found swapping the drive to be fairly simple, having a few issues with the RAM though, I've tried 3 DIMMS (a new 8 gig 1600 and 2/4 gig 1333 and each time the video doesn't work when I have the extra chip in) If I get a chance I'll try with a 4 gig 1066 which is the same speed as apparently what is onboard. Not really any options in the BIOS to adjust the video/RAM settings…. If anyone has put more ram in without this issue if they could let me know it would be great :)

  • cant select delivery option on DSE website. Anyone else having this problem?

It even says free delivery but I cannot select it

    • That's because it's almost sold out everywhere, no more stock online.

  • anybody have any luck opening the cashback link? it gives me an error everytime

Acer aspire V5-537 i5 4200U Haswell. Bought one already and never been happier.

I need a laptop and saw Lameovo 531. When putting order (early in time) there was no indication it was price error, only indication that, here is the original post quote: "For some reason, Lenovo is offering a hefty $165 discount ….

And I did order it straight way. Now, good luck to you Lameovo. You just loose a new customer for good. I got cancellation email too. Lameovo should know how easy it is to loose customer. Don't treat your customer like we desperately want Lameovo brand. It was price error, fair enough if we don't get it. Here is my suggestion, you can just let the customer have the product with correct price, but with 10% discount. That will keep your new customer and think that as marketing cost.

Without this 'price error' your product is overpriced and NOT genuinely priced. Huge discount from extraordinary overpriced product. What non-sense.

Thanks to Acer. Good ultrabook with processor Haswell i5-4200u/4GB/500GB for $420 compared to what?? i3-3120M 3rd gen/4GB/320GB in Lameovo E531 offer for $549? Come on..

And of course, for Acer it is 'Ultrabook' less than 1 inch.

  • Hang on, it says no headphone jack. That can't be right, can it? And no mic or mic jack. No memory card slot. Oh, hang on, it says no battery either. Obviously, that can't be right.

    • Seems to have a combo headphone microphone jack on the right hand side - poor location as interferes with where I place my mouse.

  • Stupid question, but does this have USB 3.0 ports?

    • +1

      1xVGA, 1xHDMI, 1xUSB3, 2xUSB2

      • thanks!

    • +1

the 1 x USB 3.0 port is at the back of the laptop which to me is an inconvenience. It has 2 x USB2 - 1 on left side and 1 on right side.

  • For those interested, saw DS Chermside still has stock in store

  • Kept an eye on this since previous price posted in http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116621.
I was considering all my options as this model doesn't have a Optical drive.
This kept me from buying the laptop. But Finally I found a solution to my problem; I can buy a external dvd writer if needed for around $30, So finally decided to buy the laptop.

    Laptop price was 499.
Paid using a $500 Wish gift card bought for $475 using RAA membership and saved $25 (If I had IND pay-wave, I could have saved another 5% :) ).
    Acer cashback $79
TRS refund $45 (Going overseas in 2 weeks time).

This brings the laptop price Down to $350 for me. But I may need to spend $30 or so for a external DVD drive in future, Still it's $350+30 = $380.

Many Thanks to the both original posters (superpower and theearth).

  • Bought one for the sister after the NOLOVE.

  • I keep seeing mention of "four color choices" but I think Dickies only have this thing in the Goldy/silver color shown?
    Did anyone see any others?

  • What type of battery life do these things get?

  • Bought one today, very happy. Thx, OP!

  • I was able to get the last one at Bondi Junction late this afternoon even if online it indicated that they were out of stock. Good thing I tried my luck. Thanks OP.

  • It doesnt have the Windows 8 key at the bottom of the laptop. where can I get the key and copy of my windows 8?

  • Hurstville and Rockdale DSE still stocks available. Really great built, fast and responsive, nice keyboard and nice touch pad. For those that is fussy about screen, please go to the store to get a look before buying, the pixels are really very noticeable and long. Very visible in green and blue. However this is very personal.

Not a massive fan of the touchpad. I think partially because I am coming from a Macbook Air - with an industry-defining touchpad.

Everything else is great though. Runs smoothly, windows 8 is getting the boot…

Edit: Oh yeah. It's thin. Really thin for a 15" laptop.

The plastic coating is very crappy. Already got a decent sized scratch and I've been babying it!

The touchpad definitely is getting on my nerves, don't know how much is the hardware and how much is the software, but I'll get used to it.

  • has anyone managed to install a SSD in it? I have been trying all afternoon and evening…

i have a uefi usb stick with win8 on it. It installs win8 fine onto the ssd, no noticeable errors. but when it restarts after the install it refuses to boot into win8. It only tells me there is no viable boot partition. I have not played with the connection inbetween the reboot.

i swapped back the original hdd that came with it. and it always picks it as viable boot partition and enters win8 fine.

i tried googling, and it seems that converting from the legacy to uefi on the drive may cause errors. and i should correctly delete the old partition. which i have already tried but no luck. anyone else experiencing similar errors? anyone managed to replace the hdd for sdd?

    • +1

      too late to edit.

      found a solution.
You need to "clean" then convert the drive to gpt (which is used for uefi)

google how to install win 8 uefi
