    Okay. First thing to ask yourself is whether you actually NEED the 3G. Users have noted that it will drain your battery much faster. You can always tether 3G from your mobile. I think Sony realised this and that's why they're no longer offering a 3G option with the new VITA 2000s.

    That brings me to the next point; the new VITA 2000. You can preorder this in whatever the hell color you want by importing it from Japan for about $230 including shipping. It most likely will come to the West soon but no one knows when. It's lighter, longer lasting and slimmer than the VITA 1000 but has an 'inferior' screen (according to armchair experts and early impressionists). Up to you whether you want the new one or stick with the old one and save ~$70.

    The price of a new VITA 1000 in Aus hasn't really dropped below $199 and IMO that's just a ripoff considering the ease of importing a superior model for slightly more. I'd recommend you do what I did and periodically check gumtree/eBay for second hand deals.
