New OUYA Console

I was wondering if anyone knew, other than buying from eBay, where I can have the new OUYA console sent to Australia.

I am also interested to know what people's thoughts on this gaming system and whether its actually worth buying it.

Thanks.

  • My thoughts:

Interesting idea, but having an exclusive store kills it. Something of a throw away toy, don't expect to get huge value out of it.

I have an OUYA (I backed the initial crowdfunding campaign).

    I am very disappointed.

The exclusive store had tremendous potential. Unfortunately it has not lived up to that potential for me.

    GAMES:
The most enjoyable game I have tried so far is "You Don't Know Jack". YDKJ was technically impressive when I first played it in 1998 on Windows95. The questions have been updated to the modern day, but I feel that the ouya should be capable of more. The free trial consists of a short set of questions which took us about half an hour to complete. Upgrading the game for $9.99 will buy another 20 question sets, which I find to be on the expensive side.
The ouya store is not full of games from talented indie programmers who just needed a way to reach their audience, rather it is full of remakes of (very) early DOS games I have never heard of before.

    CONTROLLER:
The trackpad in the middle of the controller was a great idea in theory, but in practice it is very jerky, unresponsive and incredibly imprecise.
The buttons continually get stuck under the plastic cover. The ouya team promised that they would revise the design from the kickstarter to prevent this 'unlikely' occurrence. Then when the early manufacture developer units exhibited this very problem they again promised that the consumer units would not. The reality is that my consumer console gets stuck buttons all the time.

    AUTOMATIC UPDATES:
I don't turn on my ouya every day, but when I do turn it on it almost always wants to do a firmware update. This takes over 20 minutes. Additionally, if a game has an available update, you can't play it until it has finished updating.

I do not recommend buying an OUYA as a 'gaming system'. You would get far better value for money buying an original xbox/ps2 and some second hand games. Or, buy an xbox360 controller for windows, download steam and play games on your pc.
On the other hand if you are technically savvy, the ouya may be of use as a media console.

    • How is the performance of it? The games list looks decent.

  • You can get an Ouya at SuperUFO.com, albeit marked up. Yes they are a reputable store, I've used them no fuss.

TBH that money would be better off buying the new Sony Vita TV, much better value for similar price.
