KFC 9 for $9.95 special - special condition? Real deal?

it seems like there is a special condition embeded to the deal. It must contain a couple of wings in it (i was quoted).
if you buy other combos, you can choose not to have wings in it.

so is it real special? or they will stuff 4 wings in it to make it cheap enough for the big profit?

  • You cannot request that you have breast and leg only, which I can confirm, as it happened to us.

    Still a good deal though.

    • yeah, 10 years ago I am happy with the wings. (normally comes with a bit of meat at the side)

recently the wings seems to shrinked to just bones…… few occasions it's just over fried skin with no meat at all

till the end I bought the 19.95 combos with no wings. (only 8 pc though plus others)
only 4 dollars more expensive compare to if i buy the 9 pcs + coleslaws and potato gravy.

Yeah, it's due to the Global Fried Chicken. :)

I like wings too but not if it's just skin and bone.

    • I always request breast and leg only and get just that! :)

However from my past experience, if you don't ask you'll generally end up with alot of wings/ribs.

I ordered this, the other day, Happy to pay the $9 for what I received.

  • The maximum amount of wings you should receive is 2-3.
The 9pc is one whole chicken, which contains:
    2 Thighs
    2 Ribs
    2 Legs
    2 Wings
    1 Breast

The reason why you can choose the pieces in some of the meals is because KFC only allow selections of pieces up to a certain amount.
    < 10 - Max of 2 of a piece
    10 to 15 - Max of 3 of a piece
    15 - 21 - Max of 4 of a piece

The worst one I had before was 3 pieces meal that came with 2 wings

      • **** that. Did you go back and complain?

    • What is a "rib"?

      • It's bones and coating. Pretty much same as a wing. Bought a Streetwise Feast the other day with six pieces, three of which were wings. What a satisfying dinner. If KFC are wondering why I am not rushing back, that's why.

        • lots of skin on this part :))))

  • I wish KFC would just publish what the set combinations are so we would have a basis for complaint if we ordered something and got an excessive amount of a piece we didn't like.

But sadly I don't think they will ever publish the combinations.

    • i wish KFC would just publish the secret 11 herbs and spices….

      • +1

        one of them is salt…….

        • The other 10 used to be Monosodium Glutamate: went nicely with the Monosodium Chloride

      • Its not just the 11 herbs and spices this has been mostly figured out, its the way they cook it as well.

If you want to go to the effort of duplicating KFC you can get very close, at that point a lot of people can't be bothered and go and buy some KFC instead.

        • Can you, really?? How? Do you have a recipe to reproduce it as close as possible?

        • Its all over the Internet. I've seen a recipe for a very accurate one, but don't have it on me.

          I'll be clear.

You need to have specific ingredients your supermarket and even spice store might not have. (you have to order from Internet etc sometimes)

I'm pretty sure you need a pressure cooker.

Its difficult to do if you are not a very good cook.

        • my aunt worked for KFC recipe department in USA she told me 10 out of 11 you can get at supermarket last one she did tell me name u have real look around to find.

          Lots of people have stories.

Sanders and his wife made the mix himself at home and shipped it out to stores. When business took off, half the seasoning mix was made at one spice supplier, and the second half made at another. They were then shipped to the company where they were combined and shipped to stores in plain packaging.

There are some ingredients that are dead obvious like white pepper, salt and MSG. But the different "owners" of "KFC" over the years demanded more profit. So the mix was fiddled with, to use things like spice oils instead of the spice itself, using cheaper quality or variety of the spice. Then they changed the cooking method, oil…

KFC is very ordinary today compared to what it once was. They claim they are using the same recipe (which only a handful of people have seen over the decades) but it tastes little like it did in the 70s (and folks older than me say it had already changed a couple of times by then).

So even if someone in recent years thought they knew what KFC use today - it would still not be what the Kentucky Fried Chicken was originally. (LOL, who would want to copy what KFC cook today, if they'd tasted earlier versions!?)

That TC34 recipe on the Internet might be the very first recipe, it might not. What I do know is, it tastes better than the greasy, sweaty, stuff KFC churns out today.

      • KFC don't know what the recipe is. It's locked away in a vault, and has been changed several times over the years by finding cheaper ways - i.e. replacing spices with spice oils, etc. They have also changed the oil they fry in, the ovens used, etc.

There are KFC replication sites online. I spent days reading and my wife & I now make it ourselves at home. Compared to KFC, the recipe is how do I say this - BRILLIANT.

        • mind to share?
          :)
          cheers

The recipe for the KFC coating can be found here:

          http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/2430753/tc34d-doc-december-1…

How to use it is another matter. I've tried to type it out before, but once you start, there's a lot of side info that needs to be included…

I'll give it another go though. See here:

        • cheers!

        • You're welcome. If anyone does actually make it and has questions, post them in that other thread. I'll stay subscribed to it for a couple of months at least, so I'll receive any new posts.

    • You can see the supposed combinations on signs over the chicken oven at my local KFC when you go through the drive through. The combinations aren't great, and even then you tend to get worse that what they suggest.

  • I got 4 wings and 2 drumsticks the other day.
    Not impressed.

    • Complain. They will most likely give you the six pieces again for free. I complained once, when my chicken had multiple feathers hidden under the coating. Vom.

The more I think about KFC, the more I wonder why I ever return to that place. Bottom line, it's nasty. It's those herbs and spices I tell you, without them they wouldn't have a business.

      • Recipe aside, it's not even cooked properly. I remember in the 70s it was cooked so well, kids ate the little rib bones - they were nearly crunchy. Today they're more "steamed" than cooked.

      • My friend work in a restaurant, his advise is "DO NOT COMPLAIN" the chef will spit on your food to give you extra taste.

        • KFC = restaurant = oxymoron.

        • Please advise us your friends restaurant. So we can all not go there.

  • I love KFC and If one day it was to shut down, my heart would break. I enjoy all the pieces and make sure I get every meat off every bone- It's best done while your watching your favourite tv show etc. Breaking Dad…. But if you are like me and rarely get the chance to eat KFC due to etc. Wife…… you would enjoy every piece as equal as the other. You would never give up your child for adoption if it was just a tad different. Peace Yummo in my Tummo

  • KFC service used to be tip top, you can request whatever parts you like.

Their slogan was "YUM" You Understand Me (Customer)
Now is You "" Me like the chicken - totally to the bone…..
