Blu-Ray movies help

Hey guys,

Sure this is a common issue but am yet to find a solution…

If you have a blu-ray player running through normal tv speakers (i.e. stereo sound) is there a way to fix the issue of the fact background noises are much louder than actual dialogue?? Nothing more annoying than constantly changing volume to try and compensate each time. Unfortunately surround sound is not an option at this point but surely there are settings than can be tinkered with?

  • Sounds like a problem with your TV. I assuming you are using HDMI to connect your player to the TV? The TV should then negotiate an audio stream with the player. The TV is then responsible for deciding how to play this on the speakers it has.

    What TV are you using?

    • Got a Panasonic 60" plasma. Cant remember the model but yes using HDMI. Not sure how to change settings and to what?

      • Didn't say it was a settings issue, just a TV issue.

One of these things is happening:

1: The disc you are using just have bad audio. Probably not the issue, but listed for completeness.

2: The DTS/Dolby Digital on the disc is read by the player. The TV says it doesn't support this, so the player converts the audio to stereo PCM. It does a bad job of this, creating your problem. Depending how old your TV is this is possible, but not the most likely.

3: The Player just pushes the audio to the TV. The TV decodes this and plays it out the two speakers. It does a bad job.

There are two possible work arounds for problem 3:

A: Look for a setting in your player to force conversion to PCM to stop the TV from doing bad things.

B: Connect the analogue audio from the player into the TV. You will probably have to connect the video over VGA/Composite/DVI to get the TV to play the alternate audio source.

I have seen (heard) some terrible audio decoders in TVs I assume because they assume that anyone who cares enough isn't going to use the in TV decoder anyway.

        • Cheers for the advice.

The TV is only 2-3 years old it's a 3D viera. The blu-ray player is also a panasonic 3d player only about 1-2 years old. I'll suss the player to see anything regarding PCM

  • Do you mean things like explosions and music are really loud? Or ambient background sounds?

    • Like music and explosions

  • Check the Audio settings of the blu ray player
Also check the Audio settings of the TV, it might be in a virtual surround mode
