Laptop for under $1500

Gday, another request here.

I'm after the following specs in a laptop… Don't know if it's possible for the price range though…

Either 14.1 or 15.4" screen.
1gig RAM - preferably more.
Intel Core 2 Duo processor - preferably from the 7XXX series.
Graphics doesn't matter.
Battery life should be good - greater than 4-cell battery would be good.
Wireless capabilities - WiFi, BlueTooth etc.
HDD space doesn't matter either.

And that's about it.
Please no MacBooks, I can't stand the sight of them.

I'm aiming for under $1500, closer to $1000 would be ideal.
I'm a unistudent, so student discounts may apply.

Thanks in advance.
David.

  • To get Core 2 Duo T7xxx it would be closer towards $1,500 than $1,000. I have recently bought a Inspiron 1420, and its base model has now dropped to $1,249. Go to Dell, select Home/Home Office under Notebooks, select Entertainment, and it is the model furthest to the left.

Upgrading to T7100 will bring the price to $1,456.40, which gives you

    • Vista Home Premium
    • 14.1" 1280x800
    • 2GB RAM
    • GeForce 8400M w/ 128MB GDDR3
    • 120MB SATA drive
    • 8x DVD RW
    • 6 cell battery
    • 802.11n
    • Plus other craps like Google desktop and Norton antivirus that you need to uninstall first thing you boot up :)

Bluetooth at $19.20 extra. Dell runs EPP program with universities so you can get discount through them. Or if you are part of motor club (NRMA, RACQ, etc) you can also get 3-10% discount. MoneyBackCo is also offering 3% moneyback on Dell products. So the final price, depending on your preference, will definitely be below $1,400.

Inspiron 1420 is actually not bad. It feels more solid than my old Latitude D600 and the body does not flex. However, as I have also recently upgraded to Latitude D630 (same 14.1" widescreen and form factor), Inspiron does not feel as well made as its business-class cousin.

  • Oh by the way the battery life of those 6 cells are around 3 hours. YMMV depending on what you do with it. 9 cells will bump it to 4+ hours, but the battery will stick out at the back which can be annoying when carry around.

  • HI, if u go at Centrecom's website, on their PDF catalog for notebooks they have this special

    NEC Core2Duo T7200 2.0Ghz CPU, XP Pro for $1299

Toshiba Core2Duo T7100 1.8Ghz with 4GB of DDR Ram Vista Business for $1499.

    pretty good deal, i reckon.

    cheers

    • Hey that is very cheap! Thank you very much for helping out. Here is the direct link to PDF.

  • I buy all my computer and bits from www.todaytech.com.au

You need to register with them to get a login etc and to do that you need an ABN. But if you see somethign you like and want me to check a price send the link back and I will log in and check it for you.

  • hi
I have been looking for a laptop too but ended up buying one from Ebay (it was a deal i couldn't pass, normally i would buy from retailers).
    Many sellers offer warranty too.

But if you want to buy from Dell you should check out their factory outlet store:
    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=au&l=en&s=dfo…

They offer pre-configured ( unused customer returns) at discounted prices (often 200-400 dollars off).
You can only order by calling..so be quick when you see a good deal.

There is a Vostro small business class notebook with Core 2 Duo T5470, 1G RAM, Nvidia 8400M 256Mb 80GB HD for $1023 delivered.
But i have seen better deals, so wait around if you are patient enough…good luck!

  • Nice find. Thanks for that. I can't believe I hadn't heard of the Factory Outlet…

  • Bumpity!

    • Still looking for one after 4 months?

      • Yeah I kinda gave up…
Now I'm more focussed since I'm doing Honours at Uni this year and will most definitely need one.

  • I got a good laptop deal from officeworks couple months ago on an ex-display:

    Acer 5710G :

    • Intel Core Duo T2450 2.0ghz
    • 1GB DDR2
    • ATI HD 2300 video card 128mb dedicated
    • 120gb HDD
    • Vista Home Premium

    Price was $1098
minus -$149 cash back from Acer
    minus -$100 ex-display discount
    + ex-display sweetner was a free microsoft wireless mouse 6000 = $80
minus -$20 microsoft cash back on mouse

So all up $878 before salary sacrfice.

With salary sacrifice i take the GST off and disocunt it further by my marginal tax rate.

  • eh get a mac

    • Unfortunately many of us have already sold our souls to the Dark Overlord, aka Sith Bill Gates and his sidekick Steve Ballmer from Redmond, and the reality distortion field from Jobs simply doesn't work…
