VicRoads will automatically cancel vehicle registration which has been expired for more than three months.

VicRoads may also cancel registration if action requested in a Notice of Suspension of Registration of a vehicle has not been taken within the period specified in the suspension notice.
The commencement date of cancellation is the date the cancellation is recorded on VicRoads records.

  • I always understood expiry date meant just that. Why not just pay it early? The registration renewal (and sticker) always arrives at least a minimum of a month before it is due to be paid giving ample time to organise payment. If your renewal hasn't arrived before you depart then I feel quite certain you could simply go to VicRoads and ask to pay then and there. Why run the risk of your registration being cancelled?

    • Or get someone else to pay it if the paperwork doesn't arrive in time. (Vic doesn't have yearly roadworthy inspections, right?)

You have 3 months before the registration expires and a new RWC is required.
However, the car cannot be driven during those 3 months.
