Make sure your travel insurance covers car rental excess, not all do - you need to read the policy fine print. Kiwicampers standard excess for the Ford Transit is NZ$4000. They want NZ$35/day to reduce the excess to NZ$400. For the Toyata Hiace, the figures are exactly half these amounts. The excess on a travel insurance policy is usually only about A$100!

As far as discounts go - check out the tourist information guides for each of the regions you're planning on visiting - they usually had discounts for activities and tours (eg. $10/10% off).
