GOG: 80+% off When Buying 5+ Games

420

You need to pick 5 games and you'll get 80+% off.

Here are the games you can choose from:

Game Discounted Price Normal Price Saving %
Alan Wake's American Nightmare $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Alan Wake $5.00 $29.99 83.33%

Blackwell Bundle $3.00 $14.99 80.00%
Cat Lady, The $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Driftmoon $3.00 $14.99 80.00%

Signal Ops $3.00 $14.99 80.00%
Slender: The Arrival $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Stacking $2.00 $14.99 86.67%
Strike Suit Zero $4.00 $19.99 80.00%
Sword of the Stars: The Pit $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Torchlight $2.00 $14.99 86.67%
Waking Mars $2.00 $9.99 80.00%
Zafehouse: Diaries $2.00 $9.99 80.00%

I don't think you get steam keys for any of these. I believe all games from GOG are DRM free - you just download an installer and install the game (not even a CD key or anything).

To me, the best buys (ie, games that I don't think have been this discounted before) seem to be Sword of the Stars: The Pit ($2), Blackwell bundle ($3), Zafehouse: Diaries ($2), Evoland ($2), Waking Mars ($2), and certainly Omerta + DLC ($5).

Btw, you have to use the main deal link (http://www.gog.com/high5) to choose the games and get the discount. I included links to the games themselves just so people can check out more info about them.

  • Makes me wonder what kind of profit margins they were operating on. And how much the developer's cut was.

    • +2

From what I understand, discounts like these are pre-arranged with the developers/publishers. Distribution platforms like GOG, Steam, iStore, etc. have fixed profit margins regardless of the price it sells for (eg, I believe for most of them the developer's cut is 70%).

      • For most other Digital Distribution platforms it works like this, the developer or publisher can set whatever price and the store front (be it MS, Apple, Amazon… not 100% sure but I think GOG do the same) give the developer 70-80% cut.

Usually it is down to the dev/publisher to decide if they want to participate in the sale, not like traditional bricks and mortar stores where it is either to clear excess/old stock or is along the lines of what bigosmallo describes

      • That would make sense if all the games in the deal are from the same publisher. I'm not sure why one publisher would accept 80% discount if the buyer buys 4 other games from a different publisher…

        • +1

It's a case of GOG saying to the publisher something like "We're going to have a sale on, to you want to be included? The terms will be that they must buy 5 of the games that are on sale, so there'll likely be a high rate of people buying games even if they'd otherwise be unlikely to buy.", to which the publisher would reply "Sure! I'd love to sell more copies of these games that are past their primary sales window."

Basically the fact that other publishers are included is mostly irrelevant.

        • I find myself often being asked to purchase multiplayer games that friends bought during sales like these.

        • Bingo

It works more like a rebate scheme I'm guessing. So if the cost price is $10, and the game sells for $5 during this sale then GOG has an arrangement with the supplier for a rebate of $6 or $7 to cover the rest of the cost price and to add a bit of profit.

    +1 for the effort

  • Already own all my desired games so I can't make the most of this sale… first world problems!

I wonder why people make a big deal about steam keys? Surely the fact that you can "add non-steam game" into steam would make it pointless?

    Thanks for the post OP!

Integration with Steam's friend system is a big drawcard for me. On a more cosmetic level - achievements, screenshots and time played stats are important to me also.

    • I dabble in both, don't put all your eggs in one basket :)

    • +3

There are two main reasons I prefer Steam keys:
      1. Automatic updates.
      2. Having my game collection in one place. I often go back to playing games, and having all of them in Steam where I can just right click to reinstall them is a big advantage to me.

      • You can do those things with Origin also… do you prefer Origin over GOG?

        • +2

Well, I can't have all my game collection on Origin both because I already have 300 games on Steam, plus they don't even sell most games. Yes, Origin has automatic updates, which is good, but I use it for very few games so it's not as critical. Hence for me it's much of a muchness between Origin and GOG.

      • Steam doesn't have these games and also GOG guarantees they run on Windows 7 etc (unlike Steam)

        • +1

I'm aware of that, I'm just responding to the question of why people prefer Steam keys (rather than just adding non-Steam games).

      • +1

3.. Unmetered downloads from most ISPs

  • Alan Wake is worth it, American Nightmare is terrible though.

Other good options are Torchlight and Amnesia. Haven't tried the rest so I can't comment further :P

    • Torchlight and Amnesia are both good games, but they've both been on sale for that price or less before. Torchlight was even free from GOG not too long ago.

  • Does anyone find this funny how they criticise steam for having massive sales and then they go and do it or am i missing something….

  • Bah - bought Zafehouse Diaries on steam for $10 last weekend :(

I can recommend the game to any zombie-genre fans, though be warned it has a near-vertical learning curve. It is very rewarding when you get the hang of it though..
