Bird nesting or playing or "hole punching" somewhere on my roof

anyone has any good deal for someone to come and take care of it?
roughly how much for the cost?
any recommendation?

  • any recommendation?

    Get some earplugs??

In all seriousness though, do you know it's actually inside your roof? If it's not, then there's not much at all that can be done, unless it's vermin (such as Indian Myna) in which case you're legally allowed to trap it, but good luck with that.

    • any recommendation in terms of bird control, something that i can do to prevent they nesting or playing inside somewhere between my roof and room(i tried to climb inside my roof and could not see any bird). I believe they got in from the drain near the eave part of my house. Or any where can get high ladder so i can climb up and check if there is a hole or something they get in?

  • get up on a ladder and see what's going on on your roof and then you can determine where to go from there

    • it is double storey and just wondering if possible to hire longer ladder? eg from bunning or?

Take a walk a couple of houses away with some binoculars if you have them and just watch the roofline for a while. Also have a look at the eaves and see if there is any broken bits etc. Once you can see their entry point it will be a matter of blocking entry with chicken wire. Don't just stuff it In the hole, they can pull it out again. Pull a couple of tiles up and install the wire like you would if you were making a cage. And nail or staple it in.

If it seems too hard, most pest controllers will do the job. But just make sure they know you want the wire installed correctly.

You can hire longer ladders, but you still need to get it home on your car. Or pay delivery and pick up.

  • Do you know it is a bird or birds. When do you hear the sounds. Day or night. There are two other roof pests. Possums and rats/mice. Possums will dance fight and pee all over the place. To get rid of them will depend on your state laws regarding protection. If it is safe, and you believe you have found the entry hole, you will need ladder, apple and chicken wire and something to secure block the hole. After dusk and if you believe the possum has left the roof area, place apple in side the opening and seal the hole. Ensure you can reopen the hole the next night or the next. Why, if the apple pieces are still there there should be no other possums. Reseal and jobs done till they find new hole. U-tube the correct procedure on ladder safety. Rodents are simiple, use NON-RETURN bait packages such as Racumin and seed the inside of the roof. Rodents will feast and then die. With the right bait the rat eaters ( dogs, cats, birds, gollum) will gernally not be injured. Normally, Birds you will not hear. Now, If that stragey fails or you fall of the ladder, borrow a owl from harry potter. Owls eat possums and rodents. RSPCA will supply traps for use, and if not pests will release then in their territory ! Your back yard? Still have to fix hole. If possum not protected they are good eating.

    • thanks for the tips, but just wondering if i can pay for someone to do that? eg pest controller? or any suggestion or recommendation i mean for the pest controller or someone who can fix this up for me? because it is double storey house and i have no idea where to get long ladder and i need to hire a car to take the ladder home and return so may be rather just pay and solve.

    • Nope, not good eating, they carry all sorts of nasties. New Zealanders generally turn them into a merino-possum wool blend outfit…really warm.

  • Also forgot, eaves can be aspestos so be warned.

  • As another poster said, you really need to find out what type of creature you have up there. I am guessing you have possums which can actually sound like evil, manic elephants once they have moved in. If that is so, then you really need the expertise of a pest exterminator to catch them, and seal off entry points to your roof. This could be a real necessity; I know a house where the possums chewed wiring to a heater causing a fire within a wall. Fortunately it burnt itself out but the problem wasn't identified until the "faulty" heater was being replaced. Those mynas can stomp around with wooden clogs too though. Cannot you enter your roof space from inside your house? I heard that there has been a reduction in the number of sparrows due to the inability of them to get under roof tiles these days too. Probably being bullied out by those mynas too. We don't have a problem with possums (as they have plenty of trees etc near home) but we do routinely toss poison bait regularly into our roof cavity for rats and mice; evidence that it was them and not the possums or birds quite clear. In our area a lot of the rural land is being developed for housing and some are complaining now that foxes are making off with their cats also (although those moggies are supposedly not allowed to roam). Perhaps you could call one of those animal rescue organisations for some advice on your particular issue.

  • aladdin, I can feel your pain - same boat.

Around 2 (or possibly 3) dozen pigeons live under my solar panel (which doesn't work now BTW). We can hear the birds all night. No real damage to the roof so far (although the infestation has been for the last 5 years).

I have been thinking of a chicken wire around the solar panel; but again can't do it due to the house being a double story. :) Looking for a bird control guy to do it for cheap.

Nothing cheap about that job. Five years is a long time and would have created a large demand on that spot. Netting would probably work to keep them out, but first you need solar people to remove/repair the unit. If you are not looking to repair it, just take it down. Problem solved.
