Ripped Off On LPG Installation

Last year my brother took his 4WD to get fitted with an LPG gas system. This is a review he wrote:

I had a gas system fitted to my gq patrol. The vehicle runs perfect on petrol but the gas system they installed runs terrible. Not only that they also quoted me a price, then charged another $600 extra. then when i took it back because it kept stalling they charged another $200. still was no good so took it back again, they tried to charge another $150. I should have probably gone to fair trading. NEVER GO HERE! My 4wd still runs like a dog and is using between 27L to 35L per 100km on gas.

My question is, what action can he take to get his car fixed properly and/or a refund? This occurred in November of 2012. Thanks for your feedback guys.

  • I wouldn't be posting such negative reviews then taking it back, by all means post a negative review when your problem is solved.

    I had all sorts or drama with my gas, and was told I needed to change plugs etc. I never did. Your car will always run better on the fuel.

    I would take it to another mechanic and ask for a analysis and see if the original mechanic has done something incorrectly.

    • Hey your right about the review bit. But this is my bro we're talking about.

      I have heard that some vehicles are suitable for LPG while others aren't. I had a 1984 Toyota Liteace on gas. It was great. Used about 14 or 15L/100km. Believe it or not, it seemed to run much better on gas than petrol.

      If my brother's car wasn't suited to gas conversion, isn't it the mechanics responsibility to let him know? How can they keep asking for more cash when they are the one's clearly at fault? Obviously my brother shouldn't have worn it in the first place. I'm just curious as to what are the consumers legal rights in this situation?

  • Be aware some LPG kits are more home brew than others, for example;

    I got my magna converted to LPG with a factory kit, no problem, worked awesome, great economy and it has never been serviced or need it. But then I converted another magna and got a local made kit that is sold by them all over Australia and to say it was a piece of shit would be an understatement! It needed maintenance, constant adjustments and finally it needed the gas exchanger to be replaced and that was all within 3 years. It cost a fortune, the car stalled and every trip in cost me big dollars. These shit units are all from a gas conversion company at Caloundra in Queensland. I wish I had never, ever gone near them, they weren't cheaper than a genuine conversion kit and after the expenses were added in I could have run it on premium fuel for less!

    Not all cars but more particularly kits are equal. I should have gotten it removed and refunded at the beginning as it was a problem from the start and my belief that things would ever get better was mistaken.

    The factory kit was a dream, every magna/380 should have it as it was/is awesome! You should have gotten a dieselise you wanted 4wd and economy, sorry but LPG is very hard to to break even on even if the kit and install works as it should with the added tax of 12c/L and servo price gouging! They use LPG to make up for cheaper fuel during the fuel cycle but you can come out ahead with fuel discounts from BP 2c to WW/Coles 20c/L off….

    If its under 12 months and it hasn't behaved then I would ask for a refund, but if outside of that your royally screwed!
