whats the community base like in Australia? Lots of servers lots of people?

It's not a massive community but it is a very helpful and social community.

Generally there are about 3-4 full servers in the evening. Which isn't a lot, but you never struggle to find a game.

This weekend I would image about 10-15 full servers at a time.

I've clocked about 500 hours on NS2 since October last year so there is no shortage of gameplay.

  Yeah there are allways at least 3 servers full at any time. It only takes 10 mins in a empty server to start one anyways.

Heard so much about this game back when the first one was really popular. Still haven't tried it.

Is it too late to get into it? What's the learning curve and level of competition like?

is it just me or can you save 1c (USD) if you buy NS2 ($6.24 USD) and the Deluxe upgrade ($3.74 USD) separately as opposed to buying the Deluxe Edition ($9.99 USD) straight out?
