My iphone is on a Optus $50 plan for 2 years that expires this Dec. Last year on holiday in HK, I purchased a local SIM card for the phone but it wouldn't work and the dealer said Optus has locked the phone for use by its own network only. Is there any way around this as I will be going there again this Nov. Cheers.

You have to call Optus to unlock the phone for you. There should be steps to backup and do a restore of your iphone to default. When you have it restored to default settings, there is a message that says "You have successfully unlocked your iphone". Then you can restore it with your last backup!
Make sure you have the most current version of itunes.. I tried to unlock before I went to HK last september using an older version, and it failed but didnt realise till I got to HK!
Good luck!
after unlocking the phone i suggest you to insert the HK sim card to your iphone and make sure it works.
Thanks for the advise flowergirl13 & spiritlow88!
